Gurren Lagann Gets Stage Play in Tokyo in October

    posted on 2014-04-12 02:01 EDT

Open auditions to be held for "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann -Engeki-hen-"

Office Endless announced on Saturday that Gainax's Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann anime series will receive a stage play adaptation. "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann -Engeki-hen-" will be held in Tokyo's Zenrōsai Hall Space Zero theater from October 22 to 26.

The Gurren Lagann -Engeki-hen- Production Committee is producing the play in full cooperation with anime studio Gainax. The play will present new material that "wasn't able to be presented" in the original television anime series. Japanese musician and actor IZAM is scripting and producing the play. Like other Gurren Lagann titles, "engeki" has a literal meaning for its kanji characters — "flame attack" — and a possible wordplay in its pronunciation — "theatrical play."

The production is holding open auditions and accepting applications until May 16. Regardless of acting experience, men between 18 and 35 years old and women between 18 and 30 years old may apply.

The project launched official Facebook and Twitter accounts on Saturday.

The Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann television anime premiered in Japan in 2007. The Gurren Lagann the Movie –Childhood's End- compilation film debuted in Japan in 2008, and its sequel film Gurren Lagann the Movie – The Lights in the Sky Are Stars premiered in 2009. Aniplex USA released the Japanese Blu-ray Disc box set that includes the series and both films in North America last year.

The series has also inspired two Gurren Lagann Parallel Works original video anime and various manga adaptations and spinoffs.

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Anime Gets 2nd Season

    posted on 2014-04-16 00:25 EDT

1st season inspired by Wataru Watari's light novel series aired in 2013

A poster for Shogakukan's Gagaga Bunko imprint is announcing that production on a second anime season based on Wataru Watari's Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) light novel series has been green-lit. The May issue of Shogakukan's Sunday GX magazine is also announcing the news on Saturday.

Shogakukan had hinted earlier this week that an important announcement would be made on Friday for the series during its niconico live program "Monthly Gagaga Channel." Watari will make an appearance as a guest. The poster is for the ninth volume of the series, which is scheduled to also be released on Friday.

The romantic comedy revolves around an antisocial high school student named Hachiman Hikigaya with a distorted view on life and no friends or girlfriend. When he sees his classmates talking excitedly about living their adolescent lives, he mutters, "They're a bunch of liars." When he is asked about his future dreams, he responds, "Not working." A teacher gets Hachiman to join the volunteer "service club," which happens to have the school's prettiest girl, Yukino Yukinoshita.

Crunchyroll streamed the first anime season as it aired in Japan last year. The light novels also received a video game adaptation and a tie-in original video anime last year. The novel series with illustrations by Ponkan8 topped the annual Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! (This Light Novel is Amazing!) rankings for 2013.

Nobutoshi Canna, Masaya Onosaka, Miyuki Sawashiro return from games as Takaya, Jin, Chidori in June 7 film

The official website for the Persona 3 films updated at midnight on Tuesday, and posted a new promotional video for the upcoming Persona 3 the Movie #2 Midsummer Knight's Dream film. The video features the theme song "Fate In Our Hands" by Lotus Juice.

Yukari: When I found out I had power, I thought it wasn't a coincidence. I was scared, but I thought I could learn something about dad... But in the end, there wasn't a reason for me to be here. After all, dad... It was all his fault.
Junpei: All right! It's here! The blue ocean, the white sand!
    Fuka: Kirijo-senpai, you're so pretty.
    Yukari: This is amazing!
Junpei: This kind of thing is just so great!
Aegis: I've found you. There's no mistaking it.
Ikutsuki: Her name is Aegis. As you can see, she is a robotic maiden.
Shinjiro: I've already thrown away my power.
Mitsuru: This is the Kirijo family's sin...
    Yukari: What dad did...
Takaya: Would you like to go back to your boring normal life?
Makoto: Then things should stay the way they are.
Ken: Please let me fight with you!
    Makoto: Aegis!
    Aegis: Makoto!
Elizabeth: However, please be careful of an approaching entity...
    Yukari: No!!

The website is also displaying a new key visual for the film:

The website announced three returning cast members from the game:

Nobutoshi Canna (Shaman King, Little Busters!) as Takaya, the leader of Strega. His wish is for humanity to fall into ruin by the power of the Shadows. In addition to being able to act freely during the Dark Hour, he can also use a Persona.

Masaya Onosaka (Tales of Symphonia the Animation, Hajime no Ippo Rising) as Jin, a member of Strega who deeply respects Takaya. With his skills with technology and weapons, he runs Strega's website.

Miyuki Sawashiro (Galaxy Angel, K) as Chidori, the only female member of Strega. With her Persona, she supports Takaya and Jin. She can be found from time to time at the area in front of the station sketching.

    The new cast will join:

Akira Ishida (Slayers Next, Neon Genesis Evangelion) as Makoto Yūki, the protagonist. He has the wildcard Persona, meaning he can use various Personas and not just one.

Megumi Toyoguchi (The Sacred Blacksmith, Danganronpa The Animation) as Yukari Takeba, Makoto's female classmate who is on the archery team. Her persona is Io.

Kousuke Toriumi (Hakuouki, Pretear) as Junpei Iori, Makoto's classmate and close friend. He likes cracking jokes in almost any situation. His Persona is Hermes.

Rie Tanaka (Hyperdimension Neptunia The Animation, Chobits) as Mitsuru Kirijō, Makoto's upperclassman and the president of the student council. She is close friends with Akihiko, and they have known each other since middle school. Her Persona is Penthesilea.

Hikaru Midorikawa (Majestic Prince, Slayers Next) as Akihiko Sanada, the captain of the school boxing team. He is obsessed with training, and often gets scolded by Mitsuru for overdoing it. His Persona is Caesar.

Mamiko Noto (Hell Girl, Arcana Famiglia) as Fūka Yamagishi, a girl in a different class than Makoto and the others. Although very shy, she is extremely kind. Her Persona is Lucia.

Voice recordings from the late Isamu Tanonaka will voice Igor, the master of the Velvet Room. A very mysterious old man who has the ability to read destinies and fuse Personas.

Miyuki Sawashiro (Galaxy Angel, K) plays Elizabeth, a guide of the Velvet Room who is a bit eccentric and curious about the outside world.

Kazuya Nakai (One Piece, Gintama) will play Shinjirō Aragaki, an upperclassman and friend of Akihiko and Mitsuru's who left the school and Iwatodai dorm for reasons unknown.

Maaya Sakamoto (Coppelion, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children) as Aegis, an anti-shadow robot. For some unknown reason, she considers it her mission to protect and serve Makoto. Her Persona is Palladion.

Megumi Ogata (Yū Yū Hakusho, Danganronpa The Animation) as Ken Amada, an elementary school boy who was found to have the potential to summon a Persona. Though young, he sports a very mature attitude. His Persona is Nemesis.

Unchanged from the game, Koromaru has no credited voice actor. His Persona is Cerberus.
Tomomi Ishikawa will direct the film at A-1 Pictures from scripts by Jun Kumagai with supervision by Seiji Kishi. Keisuke Watabe is designing the characters for the film, and will also serve as animation director. Shoji Meguro and Tetsuya Kobayashi are scoring the soundtrack.

The film will open on June 7 in Japanese theaters.

In the game's story, there is a hidden time known as the "Dark Hour" that exists between one day and the next when all movement in the town stops. During this time, terrible creatures called Shadows roam, and a group of high school students in the city of Iwatodai are drawn into the Dark Hour to fight these creatures and explore the mysterious tower of Tartarus. This group uses weapons called Evokers that are used to summon Personas.

  • Haruma Miura Joins Main Cast of Live Action Attack on Titan Movie to Release in 2015

A follow-up report has been announced regarding the live-action movie project for Attack on Titan, a huge hit TV anime that broadcast in 2013. Joining the main cast is Haruma Miura who has played roles in a number of movies and dramas.

Other than the fact that Shinji Higuchi has been welcomed on as director and Yusuke Watanabe as writer, much of this live-action movie project is still shrouded in mystery. Anticipation from fans will rise until more is revealed about this project that is developing in secrecy.

Haruma Miura is a popular actor whose role in the movie Tokyo Park and his impressive performance as a young boy stricken with an incurable disease in the drama Boku no Ita Jikan are still fresh in memory. Though only 23 years old, he has plenty of achievements behind him, and we wonder what kind of performance he will give this time.

Though based on the original story and characters, the movie’s story, which is being supervised by author Hajime Isayama, will incorporate new aspects. They are aiming for a grand and spectacular film that includes the young heroes who stand against the Titans in 3D action.

In order to construct this new world, staff who are on the forefront of Japanese cinema in special effects, VFX, clothing, and more have been assembled. Katsuro Onoue, who was assistant director on The Floating Castle and Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo, will support director Higuchi as special effects director. In charge of cinematography is Shoji Ehara, winner of the Japan Academy Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography for his work on The Flying Castle. In charge of lighting is Takashi Sugimoto, winner of the Japan Academy Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction for his work on Kita no Canary. Also welcomed onto the staff as art director is Takeshi Shimizu who previously worked on Umizaru. Isao Tsuge, who previously worked on Ryomaden and Parasyte on which he was in charge of makeup and clothing, has joined the cast as clothing designer. Yoshihiro Nishimura, a leader in special moldings and makeup, is acting as special molding producer. Also including character designers Yoshiyuki Sadamoto ( Neon Genesis Evangelion ), Takayuki Takeya ( Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo ), and Kouji Tajima Parasyte, this gathering of top creators from the words of anime and special effects is not to be overlooked.

Pre-production has already begun on the movie and it seems to be progressing steadily. In order to best suit the run-down world attacked by Titans, shooting is also scheduled to take place in the holy ground of ruins, Hashima (nicknamed Gunkanjima, or Battleship Island) in Nagasaki Prefecture. Look forward to more on this project to come.

Haruma Miura Stars in Live-Action Attack on Titan Film

    posted on 2014-04-02 19:00 EDT

Newspapers: Bloody Monday actor to begin shooting on "Battleship Island" this summer

Japanese daily newspapers are reporting on Thursday that 23-year-old Haruma Miura is starring in the live-action film of Hajime Isayama's popular manga Attack on Titan. The papers say that the actor is preparing for the beginning of filming early this summer at Hashima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture. The island has been nicknamed Gunkanjima ("Battleship Island") and is known worldwide for its landscape of dilapidated buildings.

Miura's previous manga-inspired projects include Gokusen 3, Bloody Monday, Crows Zero II, and Kimi ni Todoke.

Isayama's manga depicts the battles between humans and the giants who now rule the world outside humans' walled enclaves. The film incorporates original elements into its own story.

Storyboarder and special effects director Shinji Higuchi (Heisei-era Gamera films) is set to helm the film. Yuusuke Watanabe (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, live-action Gantz, Gantz II: Perfect Answer, 20th Century Boys, Gatchaman) is writing the script. Film critic Tomohiro Machiyama, who is also friends with Isayama, is working on the scripts together with Isayama and Watanabe. Isayama has also been present at business meetings for the film and has offered ideas on the scripts and characters. TOHO is producing and distributing the film.

The film is slated to open next year. While Miura missed an event on March 30 due to poor health, the newspapers reported that he is already working again.

Higuchi already shot a live-action Attack on Titan commercial for the Subaru Forester.

Hajime Isayama's original Attack on Titan manga has inspired four spinoff manga, and a 25-episode television anime version aired last year. Isayama launched the series in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009, and the manga now has 30 million copies in print.

Kodansha Comics is publishing Isayama's original manga in North America. The company is also releasing three of the four spinoff manga, and the Attack on Titan Guidebooks: INSIDE & OUTSIDE. Vertical is publishing the Attack on Titan: Before the Fall light novel series.

Both Funimation and Crunchyroll streamed the anime version of the manga as it aired in Japan, and Funimation will release the series on home video this year.

Space Brothers Anime Film's 1st Key Visual, Story Details Revealed

    posted on 2014-04-15 01:45 EDT

August 9 film with theme of bereavement features Brian Jay as key character

The official website for the upcoming Uchū Kyōdai #0 (Space Brothers #0, pronounced "Number Zero") film revealed the first key visual on Tuesday.

Original manga creator Chūya Koyama drew the key visual. The text on the visual reads: "That day, our dreams crashed. With courage, we will launch once more."

The film's staff also revealed on Tuesday that the character Brian Jay, a legendary astronaut, will play an integral role in the film. The film will depict for the first time the "true reason" and the "starting point" behind Mutta and Hibito's goal of going to space. The film will also give more details on the other "Space Brothers" in the series: Eddie and Brian Jay.

Specifically, the film will explore the theme of bereavement and how people recover after losing a loved one, and how friends can support each other during this time of need. Hibito is confused as to why Brian Jay chose him, a rookie astronaut, to be his backup, and voices his worries that he isn't talented enough to fulfill such a role. Brian then leaves Hibito with the response: "You need to experience this tough and fun chance to your heart's content" before he goes to the moon. Then the tragic CES-43 accident ensures that the two will never meet again. After the accident, NASA begins to reconsider manned space missions.

Hibito then turns to Mutta, who is working for an automobile company, having abandoned his dream of becoming an astronaut. Mutta is running out of patience with his company, and he is transferred to the countryside. Mutta struggles with what to say to Hibito, who is grieving and feeling helpless, and he recalls words he said to Hibito when they were kids.

Advanced sales for the film will start on April 19. Those who purchase the advanced tickets will receive an Apo rubber strap.

Koyama wrote the original scripts for the "origin story" film. The ongoing television anime's director Ayumu Watanabe is helming the film at A-1 Pictures. Hiroaki Hirata and Kenn are reprising their roles as Mutta Nanba and Hibito Nanba, respectively. Rock band Unicorn is performing the film's two theme songs, which include the anime's first opening theme song "Feel So Moon" along with the new song "Hayaguchi Curry."

Koyama launched the manga in Kodansha's Morning magazine in 2007, and the manga's 22 volumes and spinoff books have 14 million copies in print. It won the General categories in both the 56th Shogakukan Manga Awards and the 35th Kodansha Manga Awards in 2011.

The manga not only inspired the recently-finished television anime series, but also a live-action film starring Shun Oguri and Masaki Okada. The live-action film earned 1.5 billion yen (about US$15 million). Crunchyroll is posting both the manga and the television anime online, and Sentai Filmworks licensed the television anime for North America.
