Feline Character Neko Pitcher Gets TV Anime Shorts

    posted on 2014-04-11 12:00 EDT

Adaptation of manga by Neko Ramen author debuts on May 3

BS Nippon Corporation announced on Thursday that it will air a series of two-minute anime shorts based on Kenji Sonishi's (Neko Ramen) Neko Pitcher manga. The manga itself runs in Yomiuri Shimbun's Sunday edition newspaper. The television anime series will air on Saturday nights starting May 3 within BS Nippon TV's ~Onedari Entame!~ Hapi★Pure news program.

Artist and illustrator Maho Shimao and actor and musician Tomu Miyazaki will voice roles in the series.

The "23-panel" baseball manga revolves around the first professional cat pitcher Miitarō, who plays for the "Nyiants." Miitarō has a great but unusual playing style distinctive of cats: he dozes off on the pitcher's mound and uses the bat to sharpen his claws. Sonishi launched the manga in April 2013, and Chuokoron-Shinsha published the first compiled volume on February 10. The manga has more than 200,000 copies in print. The franchise has also spawned stuffed toys and other character goods.

Tokyopop published four volumes of Sonishi's six-volume Neko Ramen manga, which ran from 2004-2012. The manga inspired a television anime adaptation in 2006-2007.

2nd New Sailor Moon Musical Planned for Summer

    posted on 2014-04-03 01:45 EDT

Stage musical focuses on plot similar to Sailor Moon R

The 20th anniversary Sailor Moon website announced plans for a second musical this summer. The musical will take place in the far-future of Crystal Tokyo and detail the battle against the Black Moon clan.

Cast and more details will be announced in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine and on the franchise's 20th anniversary website. The first all-female revival musical "Sailor Moon: La Reconquista" debuted in September.

    The previous musical starred:

17-year-old Satomi Ōkubo as Sailor Moon

16-year-old Miyabi Matsuura as Sailor Mercury

16-year-old Kanon Nanaki as Sailor Mars

22-year-old Yū Takhashi as Sailor Jupiter

21-year-old Shiori Sakata as Sailor Venus

    Yūga Yamato as Tuxedo Mask

Takeuchi launched the original manga in Nakayoshi in 1992, and the hit anime premiered that same year. The manga inspired 27 earlier stage musical runs with over 800 performances between 1993 and 2005. Toei's new Sailor Moon Crystal anime series will premiere in July.

Gurren Lagann Gets Stage Play in Tokyo in October

    posted on 2014-04-12 02:01 EDT

Open auditions to be held for "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann -Engeki-hen-"

Office Endless announced on Saturday that Gainax's Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann anime series will receive a stage play adaptation. "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann -Engeki-hen-" will be held in Tokyo's Zenrōsai Hall Space Zero theater from October 22 to 26.

The Gurren Lagann -Engeki-hen- Production Committee is producing the play in full cooperation with anime studio Gainax. The play will present new material that "wasn't able to be presented" in the original television anime series. Japanese musician and actor IZAM is scripting and producing the play. Like other Gurren Lagann titles, "engeki" has a literal meaning for its kanji characters — "flame attack" — and a possible wordplay in its pronunciation — "theatrical play."

The production is holding open auditions and accepting applications until May 16. Regardless of acting experience, men between 18 and 35 years old and women between 18 and 30 years old may apply.

The project launched official Facebook and Twitter accounts on Saturday.

The Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann television anime premiered in Japan in 2007. The Gurren Lagann the Movie –Childhood's End- compilation film debuted in Japan in 2008, and its sequel film Gurren Lagann the Movie – The Lights in the Sky Are Stars premiered in 2009. Aniplex USA released the Japanese Blu-ray Disc box set that includes the series and both films in North America last year.

The series has also inspired two Gurren Lagann Parallel Works original video anime and various manga adaptations and spinoffs.

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Anime Gets 2nd Season

    posted on 2014-04-16 00:25 EDT

1st season inspired by Wataru Watari's light novel series aired in 2013

A poster for Shogakukan's Gagaga Bunko imprint is announcing that production on a second anime season based on Wataru Watari's Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) light novel series has been green-lit. The May issue of Shogakukan's Sunday GX magazine is also announcing the news on Saturday.

Shogakukan had hinted earlier this week that an important announcement would be made on Friday for the series during its niconico live program "Monthly Gagaga Channel." Watari will make an appearance as a guest. The poster is for the ninth volume of the series, which is scheduled to also be released on Friday.

The romantic comedy revolves around an antisocial high school student named Hachiman Hikigaya with a distorted view on life and no friends or girlfriend. When he sees his classmates talking excitedly about living their adolescent lives, he mutters, "They're a bunch of liars." When he is asked about his future dreams, he responds, "Not working." A teacher gets Hachiman to join the volunteer "service club," which happens to have the school's prettiest girl, Yukino Yukinoshita.

Crunchyroll streamed the first anime season as it aired in Japan last year. The light novels also received a video game adaptation and a tie-in original video anime last year. The novel series with illustrations by Ponkan8 topped the annual Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! (This Light Novel is Amazing!) rankings for 2013.

Yukari: When I found out I had power, I thought it wasn't a coincidence. I was scared, but I thought I could learn something about dad... But in the end, there wasn't a reason for me to be here. After all, dad... It was all his fault.
Junpei: All right! It's here! The blue ocean, the white sand!
    Fuka: Kirijo-senpai, you're so pretty.
    Yukari: This is amazing!
Junpei: This kind of thing is just so great!
Aegis: I've found you. There's no mistaking it.
Ikutsuki: Her name is Aegis. As you can see, she is a robotic maiden.
Shinjiro: I've already thrown away my power.

Masaya Onosaka (Tales of Symphonia the Animation, Hajime no Ippo Rising) as Jin, a member of Strega who deeply respects Takaya. With his skills with technology and weapons, he runs Strega's website.

Miyuki Sawashiro (Galaxy Angel, K) as Chidori, the only female member of Strega. With her Persona, she supports Takaya and Jin. She can be found from time to time at the area in front of the station sketching.

    The new cast will join:

Akira Ishida (Slayers Next, Neon Genesis Evangelion) as Makoto Yūki, the protagonist. He has the wildcard Persona, meaning he can use various Personas and not just one.

Megumi Toyoguchi (The Sacred Blacksmith, Danganronpa The Animation) as Yukari Takeba, Makoto's female classmate who is on the archery team. Her persona is Io.

Kousuke Toriumi (Hakuouki, Pretear) as Junpei Iori, Makoto's classmate and close friend. He likes cracking jokes in almost any situation. His Persona is Hermes.

Voice recordings from the late Isamu Tanonaka will voice Igor, the master of the Velvet Room. A very mysterious old man who has the ability to read destinies and fuse Personas.

Miyuki Sawashiro (Galaxy Angel, K) plays Elizabeth, a guide of the Velvet Room who is a bit eccentric and curious about the outside world.

Kazuya Nakai (One Piece, Gintama) will play Shinjirō Aragaki, an upperclassman and friend of Akihiko and Mitsuru's who left the school and Iwatodai dorm for reasons unknown.

Megumi Ogata (Yū Yū Hakusho, Danganronpa The Animation) as Ken Amada, an elementary school boy who was found to have the potential to summon a Persona. Though young, he sports a very mature attitude. His Persona is Nemesis.

Unchanged from the game, Koromaru has no credited voice actor. His Persona is Cerberus.
Tomomi Ishikawa will direct the film at A-1 Pictures from scripts by Jun Kumagai with supervision by Seiji Kishi. Keisuke Watabe is designing the characters for the film, and will also serve as animation director. Shoji Meguro and Tetsuya Kobayashi are scoring the soundtrack.

The film will open on June 7 in Japanese theaters.
