Missing 3/11 Updates Received

As of late yesterday/early morning today (some time between 10pm-1am), all 3/11/2010 updates are now present on TAN. As with last week, appears to have been an issue with the local head-end update - following similar procedures resolved the issue.

My thoughts on the matter, I posted on another site.

I can understand them making a mistake, in today's world everyone is wanting the latest anime now. And with fansubs giving that, the legit companies can't stand around and watch a series that hasn't aired yet. I doubt Sentai or any other US licensor can get advanced copies of a show they license until the episode airs in Japan.

Obviously, in the seven episodes that have aired they can release them unedited but they will hold off on the final five until they have aired so they can ensure "they comply with current US law". This is my understanding from their statement.

I think after Vampire Bund US companies will be more careful but I can see this happening again due to the fact US companies are trying to compete with fansubers and are trying to give fans legit viewing options as a show airs in Japan.

As long as Funimation releases the DVDs uncut I can overlook this whole mess. I doubt that the anime will contain material that doesn't comply with current US law in the final five episodes but it is possible.

Amazon Halts In-House Sales of Diamond-Distributed Books
Temporary move affects all titles from Dark Horse Comics, several other publishers

The Amazon online retailer has halted in-house sales from all publishers who use Diamond Comic Distributors , including North American manga and comic publishers Dark Horse Comics , IDW Publishing , Image Comics , Marvel Comics , and Top Shelf . The move comes a few days after a computer glitch caused Amazon to list prices for Diamond -distributed titles well below their normal listed prices. Currently, these titles are only available on Amazon through third-party resellers. Titles from other companies such as Viz Media , Tokyopop , Del Rey , and CMX (via DC Comics ) are unaffected by the change.

According to the Publishers Weekly trade magazine, Amazon 's removal of in-house listings for Diamond -distributed books is apparently an effort to fix the glitch and perform an audit on which items were sold at which prices. Publishers Weekly 's source said that there is currently no timetable for when the audit will be finished.

Neither Amazon nor Diamond have officially commented on the situation.

Anime Network Online is for computers. Your best option is to get a LCD TV (or similar) and connect your computer and cable box to that.

Otherwise no, they are two different services and infrastructure networks: VOD is operated by your cable or satellite provider while Anime Network Online is operated by Anime Network.

Not on this release. That's a feature that is coming down the road. Ah, that's cool.
I'll be looking forward to that.

Something I just noticed while setting up my new VOD post.

Colors do work and get applied with bold, italic & size, though they do need to be added after the color, which has to be added first and foremost.

However, if you add and underline on it, the color doesn't get added to the underline, and if you move the code to a position before the color, none of it gets the color applied to it.

  Exmp. :

Underline after the color:

  TEST

Underline before the color:

  TEST

-edit-
Oh, and I had to edit this because I noticed something else that needs tweeking (though I did kind of notice this before the new changes).

If you end a post with something that is underlined, the underline shows up fine in the preview, but doesn't show up at all in the actual post.

-2nd & 3rd edit-
Playing around with it, it seems to show up when the post is edited, though not on the initial post.

New Bleach No Longer Slated for April on Adult Swim

The schedule of Adult Swim , the late-night television programming block of Cartoon Network in the United States, indicates that the 'Bleach' anime series will be repeated from episode 129 onward, starting early in the morning of Sunday, April 25. Adult Swim had run an onscreen bumper in January that said that new episodes of Bleach would premiere in April, but no new episodes are listed in the April schedule after episode 167 repeats early in the morning of Sunday, April 18.

The following things used to work, but got broken sometime around 2010/01/21 (http://www.theanimenetwork.com/component/option,com_kunena/Itemid,65/catid,18/func,view/id,35975/#42034).

Fix the [ code ] display so that blanks are the same width as all other chars by getting rid of the function that converts space to "& n b s p ;". The column of "x" below should all line up vertically (and the "0" on the first two lines should be identical).
1234567890_x
1234567890 x
123456789 x
12345678 x
1234567 x
123456 x
12345 x
1234 x
123 x
12 x
1 x
           x
[ end of Code: ]

The image below shows how it shows up on Firefox.
http://www.theanimenetwork.com/images/fbfiles/images/TAN_code_FF.jpg It renders non-breaking spaces as being wider than plain fixed-width spaces.

Tested on Windows 7 (Home Premium):

Firefox - the 'x's get farther and farther apart, as seen above.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)

Opera - the 'x's line up, but the first line has a digit that looks like "Ø" instead of "0"
Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.1; U; en) Presto/2.5.22 Version/10.50

Chrome - displays as expected.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/4.1.249.1025 Safari/532.5.

Safari - displays as expected.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/531.21.8 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Safari/531.21.10

MSIE 8 - displays properly for a split second, then Javascript screws thing up while attempting to make the strings of digits show up in red; all line breaks disappear, as seen below.
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0)
http://www.theanimenetwork.com/images/fbfiles/images/TAN_code.jpg The column of numbers is unreadable.

Ordered List [ ol ] = each line is supposed to be prefixed by a number:

  one (that is [ li ] one [ /li ] there)
  two
  three

Unordered List [ ul ] = each line is supposed to be prefixed by an asterisk:

  alpha
  beta
  gamma

View Source shows that the correct HTML is being generated, therefore the must be some bad CSS that is screwing up the [ li ]...[ /li ] elements.

Test to see if the different text sizes are in fact different.
: ASDFGhjkl;0123456789 = Very Small text; size=1
: ASDFGhjkl;0123456789 = ____ Small text; size=2
: ASDFGhjkl;0123456789 = ___ Normal text; size=3
: ASDFGhjkl;0123456789 = __ _ Large text; size=4
: ASDFGhjkl;0123456789 = Very Large text; size=5 (should be different from size=4)
Appears that the definition for span class="fbxl" is the same as class="fbl" .

Hi, i'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but i've been looking though the listings and I noticed a show called area 88 ova. I see epasodes 1 and 3 listed but not 2. I was wondering if its a glitch or just a mis labeling?

Mislabeling, they merged episode 2 with one of the episodes (episode 3 if I remember).

What's on Anime Network is the complete Area 88 OVA, around 195 minutes.

Yeah Ergo Proxy is not for everyone. There are some problems with it, and it REALLY drags in the middle. But it's good parts far outweighted the bad parts. For some you may think this will be your new favorite title, but it really switched gears (multiple times) and so may not amaze you like you thought it would. I liked how the went from cyberpunk thriller, to adventure, to philosophical journey and back again. But that's just me. I LOVE the way the main character looks too! And I think in the extras (i forget who was in that, it was people who worked on the show for the English release), they said THX1138 was a real inspiration, along with a host of other movies/animes.

Defiantly for the Robin fanboys though. IMO this is Robin without the weak writing.

As for why I think the review is bad. I hate short reviews, but my editor wants me to keep them short. In this review it feels like all i did was sum up the plot pretty much. I didn't delve too deeply into it all. And I didn't even mention the dub. Plus I just don't like the way it flows. But hey at least you liked it lol...

Thank you SOOOOO much for reading tho! And I hope you read the enitre review for Weathering Continent / It got cut off the first time I posted it, and read like I was an idiot lol. The entire middle part was missing when you looked at it from IE.

Regarding Deep Discount: They do have a hit and miss record when it comes to honoring mis-prices. They have done so in the past, such as the re-release of Familiar of Zero. But if they choose to not do so, through their mistake or receiving incorrect information from a vendor, they simply cancel the order. They do not charge you the higher price.

From their policy regarding errors and omissions:
In the event a product is listed at an incorrect price due to a display or typographical error, or an error in pricing information received from our suppliers or store partners, DeepDiscount.com shall have the right to refuse or cancel any orders placed for product listed at the incorrect price. DeepDiscount.com shall have the right to refuse or cancel any such orders whether or not the order has been confirmed and your credit card charged. If your credit card has already been charged for the purchase and your order is cancelled, DeepDiscount.com shall immediately issue a credit to your credit card account in the amount of your original charge.

DeepDiscount.com makes every effort to provide accurate and current information concerning all products. However, information errors and omissions may occur in the data entry or transfer process or as a result of information provided from our suppliers, store partners, or other third parties, and except as set forth in this policy statement, DeepDiscount.com shall have no liability for any such errors or omissions.

But with prices these good, it's probably worth taking the chance. If they don't honor the price and cancel your order, you're out nothing. If they honor it, you're saving quite a little pile of cash.

There was only one dub for this film. They are working on the second one atm. There are two "sets" of cast if that's what you mean though, one for Appleseed and one for Ex Machina .

Dragoon and I were talking about AMV Hell and that got me thinking. How many of you guys have actually seen all the AMV Hells? Back in the day that was like something everyone saw. Still I think many many fans watch/will watch the new ones as they come out. They don't come out every year, but like every two years-ish/whenever they get around to it, but I always viewed them as some type of thing, where all of fandom would watch and laugh. They always featured the newest stuff, but also tons and tons of golden oldies. They exposed me to a lot of great shows ;) . It's kinda like the oscars for anime, only no awards and lots of laughts!

If there's one AMV Hell everyone MUST see it's the third one, that came out September 23, 2005 (at some con) . They shown these in a bunch of cons IIRC. But they also have them online everwhere. I don't remember watching AMV Hell 1 when it came out (prob because there was no youtube back then lol), but I remember watching AMV Hell 2 when it was new (at least when it was new online lol), and AMV Hell 3 when it came out. I don't go to cons, so that's the only way I see these things. The wait for the 4th one was long...but it was worth it!

Anyway long story short, watch this if you haven't yet. One of the best AMVs ever made IMO. See how many animes you can identify.

Around which episode did it get really good for you and does it ever have fights as cool as the Hokage arc in the first Naruto? As strong as the First Invasion of the village was, the next invasion eclipses it. There are so many great fights IMO.

I love the Japanese language and plan on learning it because it is such a beautiful language. I even have a Kanji tattoo. But my most favorite thing is anime, especially the music. Like when I first started watching InuYasha, I went to lyrics sites to copy the songs so I could learn them. My plan is to one day be able to know the translation of the songs and be able to sing them. Dearest from InuYasha is my favorite one, it is such a great love song. I just wanted to share and find out everyone else's favorite anime songs.:P

Welcome!
I am currently learning Japanese and it is fun! I love the music from Inuyasha as well, my main song for my quincenera (sweet 15) was Dearest. You are in good company.

For me (as well as my best friend), it hits closer to home since we both took Kendo classes for a few years.

But to go along with that...
The comedy is actually really well done, the overall intensity of the action sequences as well as the overall good animation, and a good solid story with good charater developement throughout (save for one case, but she's American, so it's kind of a given).

I just finished up Tears To Tiara this morning. Overall, it was a very good show and one that I can easily recommend. You guys watching it on VOD should really enjoy the rest of it.

I also finished up Kamichu, which is a very cute show. It's basically a slice of life show where one girl just happens to be a god. The pacing is a bit slow and the show is very laid back, but it was still very enjoyable.

Starting Today:

Madlax

To Love Ru Part 1

I think once I'm done with Madlax, I'm going to go ahead and rewatch Kurau. It's one of my Sojitz era titles. If you guys haven't checked it out, you really need to, if even just for the incredible dub.

So i am going through all the openings, to see if Berserk is on here, and run across this gem.
Dude, talk about addicting pop. Is the anime anywhere near as good as the opening?? It's good, but if you're expecting a cheery, slapstick fun sort of comedy based on the opening then you'll be shocked to find out it's a serious, sci-fi/drama anime. It's good but it's not what the opening leads you to believe, plus Misaki Chronicles is actually season two of Divergence Eve, so you're better off starting with season one. If not, then you'll be pretty confused on what's happening in season two.

Dear Flurge Body Foam,

As a new user of your product, I have to say I am very displeased and currently writing to inform you of this fact. Because the Rite-Aid was out of my regular soap, I decided to pick up a tube of your Cool Ranch-scented body foam, as my wife and I regularly enjoy your prime-time commercials during Dancing With the Stars. Our favorite is the one with the two golfers, where the one golfer smells the other golfer and asks him "Did you wash with Flurge Body Foam today?" Following this, a herd of attractive women suddenly appears on the neatly-manicured fairway and roughs up the one golfer sexually. Then the announcer man says, "Flurge: get Flurged" and the commercial ends.

Yes, we all had a chuckle at these antics. But when a very similar herd of girls appeared this morning and surrounded my car, I failed to see the humor of this event. These girls, while attractive, could not be reasoned with. I sat terrified in my Geo for nearly two and a half hours while they pressed all manner of body parts against the windshield. I was finally able to distract them by honking my horn for two solid minutes, and while they dispersed, it seems like they have not gone far.

Gentlemen, I am a pillar of my community and the owner of several successful hardware stores. While your product does work as advertised, the side effects are highly distracting and I demand to be refunded my $3.85 in full. I hope you will respect my wishes as a fellow businessman.

Yours,

Outlander

I love the voice of the English Dub Count. His deep baritone had me switched over to the dub.
I had initially watched the sub. This is by and far one of the better adaption of previous classical written, or theatrical work for an anime.

A rework, that works. The only thing I did not like was the odd looking suits of armor.

I personally liked the textile-LSD patterns that replaced normal coloring... I will admit though, I only liked it in this show.

No, what really bothers me, is that most of these people whine about wanting dubs, then when they get them, the show is too expensive. So they wait until it's in the bargain bin to buy it, or just stream it online for free, or continue watching their fansubs.

If you're not willing to put your money where your mouth is, then SHUT THE HELL UP!

Shadow Lady takes place in the fictional city of Gray City, around a girl named Aimi Komori. She leads an ordinary, unassuming life as a waitress in a cafe until De-mo attacks her in an alley. Oddly, it brushes eyeshadow on her, transforming her into the daring, flirtatious cat burglar "Shadow Lady". To remain on Earth undetected, De-mo takes a human form and they pass him off as her little brother.
Shadow Lady's crimes befuddle the Gray City police, and a detective named Bright Honda takes it upon himself to discover Shadow Lady's true identity. Bright is also an inventor, and uses his inventions to try and apprehend Shadow Lady, but she is too crafty, and escapes him numerous times. Got this from wikipedia.

Dropping a dub halfway through annoys me even more than having no dub at all. I would much rather a show in it's entirety with one set of VAs, whether they be in english or japanese. Having to switch between the two destroys the sense of continuity and damages the entire viewing experience for me.

Well then you could just listen to the japanese audio and be done with it. If the dub was included why would this bother you? It would be better for more people IMO, so they at least would have a choice for part of the show. If they had brains of course (and of course, as Drgaoon pointed out, they don't and would complain because they are morons. But that's besides the point). YOU don't have to start with the english if you don't want to... But that's not besides the point, that is the point. Why would Sentai want to enrage "dub F.A.N.S." even more. "Dub F.A.N.S." nowaday want everything either their way or the higway.
By not including the dub, they make everyone happy: If you really liked the show, you'll get it. If not because it had no dub, then u wont and move on. Simple as that.

It's very true that people don't understand the true gravity of the B&M situation. It's getting much, much hard to get product onto shelves, and in many cases impossible. Not to mention, we are looking at the strong possibility of a future where FYE is gone and Best Buy only carries things like DBZ (if even that.)

I've noticed there have been major correlations between changes at Best Buy in particular, and significant events in the R1 anime market. The huge sendbacks last year, which hit Bandai really hard, happened right before they started having a noted increase in issues (missing almost every street date, dropping dub plans, etc.) The scale back in stores offering anime also occured right before we noticed a significant increase in the number of titles being sold sub only.

A lot of fans have the attitude that it doesn't matter to them, because they buy their anime online. But it does matter to them. It directly affects companies like Sentai and Media Blasters. Less shelf space means lower sales. Lower sales means less money to spend on things like dubs and packaging.

Also, I fully support the $10 price increase. Anime is to cheap to be sustainable as a niche market. I feel that devaluing of it is a major problem in the market, even though the constantly cheaper re-re-re releases from companies like ADV and Funimation are largely respnsible for it. Pirating and free streaming have also done their damage.

With Sentai releasing more mouth-watering, juicy sh...tuff, I began wondering what else I'd like to add to my delictable cornucopia of yummyness. Since they're releasing Appleseed on BD, I though why not get more Shirow Masamune works.

So I went online and searched for more of his work. All of his movies are already licensed and have in my collection. Same goes for some of the OVAs, though some seem to have expired. So Sentai can go after those I suppose, but I doubt that, seeing most of them are pretty old.

No, the one that realy peaks my interest is a 2008 tv series which he collaborated again with Production I.G. titled "Real Drive".

From ANN:
Genres: drama, mystery, science fiction
Themes: cyberpunk, diving, environment
Plot Summary: The Real Drive is a "neo-futuristic science-fiction suspense" story set in A.D. 2061, when a new, more secure information network called the Material Network (or "Metal") has taken over human society. However, aberrations begin to crop up as individuals chafe against the rigid system, and so-called "cyber divers" are dispatched to investigate these incidents. The main cast consists; the cyber driver Mari, an "intuitive girl" named Minamo, the team's head Eiichiro, the combat expert Sota, and the android Horon. This sounds like a keeper. Now if Sentai does decide to get this, then they'll have their own little Shirow Masamune trilogy, for anyone who has read his mangas or seen his anime know that they all have a sorta-quasi interconnectiveness/continuity with each other.

Sentai/TAN trilogy would thus be:
1. Ghost Hound
2. Real Drive
3. Appleseed

P.S. GITS would fall between 1 and 2 in the quasi continuity.

Chris Beveridge over Mania.com recently reviewed this title. He actually gave it some good marks.

Via Mania/Anime on DVD
In Summary:
Mariaholic is a series that could have gone down very familiar paths but because of how Kanako is portrayed it becomes something more. It's a fun show where she's both trying to restrain her nosebleeds as she drools with desire over various girls as well as enjoying the fact that she has such strong reactions to them. She's lustful with many of them and trying to figure out who would be her perfect match so she can have something of what her parents had. Though she doesn't want to come out of the closet, there's no real shame here or an attempt at portraying it as wrong or finding ways to change. Add this in to the really detailed and extravagant looking designs we get from SHAFT and numerous little quirks and nods in the animation and this was far more fun than I expected it to be. It ends at a good spot, gives you plenty to laugh at and lots of fanservice of different kinds for the viewer. It's not a great title but it's not a bad title. Mariaholic is a show that I'm feeling will be a real guilty pleasure of an almost trashy show.

Looks like the Thinpaks are going out of print. The first one has been de-listed on Rightstuf and Warner bros store. Others should follow as stock runs out. Not sure if this means Viz is letting go or if they are planning to rerelease it and hopefully Maison Ikkoku when the new Inuyasha series starts getting released on DVD.

I've enjoyed TANs anime selections for a while, even back when I used to work for (and use) Time Warner Cable. Expanding on that would be awesome, that I think they do a good job. They've shown me a lot of anime I never knew existed, the most recent being Negotiator Yugo Beppu which I enjoyed. Felt way too short though, only 2 cases (that spanned 13 episodes).

It was an interesting fantasy and I was entertained. Some of the effects were really good and some will make you laugh. There were touches of Moses and Frankenstein. After seeing the whole thing, the ending makes more sense now.

I saw in the credits that it was filmed in New Zealand – nice scenery, but a bit on the bleak side, which works for the story. There was one part with Spanish gypsy music that I thought was odd and some of the other music was a bit strange. Overall it wasn't bad at all, but I can’t compare it to the anime or manga, since I haven't seen or read it.

Now that I think about it – and I haven't seen it in a while – but I think some of the effects kind of reminded me of Big Trouble in Little China. I liked Dororo and I want to know –

His idea on broadcasting electricity is still a possibility, and he practically invented the long range radio, the guy who invented it in France used about 20 or thirty of Tesla's patents in his design, which Tesla gained no recognition for. It is a shame he went coo coo in the end.

Theres a thin line between genius and madness, and in his case he was literally a visionary genius. He came up with stuff that simply did not exist in any form.

His wireless energy proposal is scientifically possible, but incompatible with all of our wireless systems. If we did a global electric grid like he proposed, all wireless devices wouldn't be able to function. We would have to rework everything we own. Also, big business wouldn't be able to make money off of the stuff which is the bigger issue. How can you meter something that can be tapped into for free. Power would basically become like oxygen, they havent figured out a way to charge us for that yet.

In the end, just remember we still power cars with gasoline.

I don't think there is any legal way to watch this online. I know Tokyopop had released all of the series on DVD ,but its been out of print for sometime and is quite expensive to find all of the DVD's. Unfortunately I think you may be out of luck.

ok, so now that Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (or FMA:B as i like to call it) is on the air on Adult Swim, i'd say there's two more to go. i hope it's something good and exciting and starring my pal Johnny Yong Bosch (i really am friends with him and his wife). he couldn't tell me about any new projects he's got, which i understand. we'll have to wait and see. any guesses though? let's see, maybe Tsubasa chronicals or xxxHOLiC, but i think they're on the FUNimation channel (and xxxHOLiC is better in Japanese).

you know, i don't even know what's really popular right now with the pirate fans. i found Death Note a year before it started airing, even before it was dubbed.

Aaaaand I've been too busy with school to work with teh team directly connected with my college (Team 171) but I thought I should post this anyway. Still a really awesome competition and I suggest you go see a competition if there is one near you. It'd really great and a lot of fun for everyone. Also, if you are a student and your high school has a team I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU JOIN IT!

Jinki was a mixed bag. The core was great, especially with the unique dual track storytelling setup. But the execution and rushed nature pretty much diminished it. On one hand I think it would have been corrected as a 24/26 episode series, but on the other, I'd ask myself would one really want to watch this at that length?

Overall, I thought it was ok to pretty good way back in the day when it was coming out (I had SVOD back then so I got to see it pretty early). I think I remember liking the dub.

One of my favorite aspects of the show was the ending with Angela... They are always awesome. I highly recommend listening to the Stellvia OP/ED's for any Angela fan. (You heard it here first :P I remember praising Angela years ago over here but I don't think anyone paid attention ;)) Then be sure to pick up in my view sister series, Martian Successor Nadesico and Stellvia ... such awesome music, both of em. :) Stellvia was just ok/pretty good as a series though, nowhere as monumental as Nadesico.

I've been waiting for this title for a while. Like many others, I was hoping for a dub, but I can understand for the reasons for sub-only, and that won't stop me from purchasing. This is a definite preorder for me. It's good to see MB starting to get some titles I've been wanting. They've traditionally been the R1 I've bought the least from, except maybe Animeigo (but that's not really a good comparison.)

Just watched the movie, the credits are still rolling. Yeah its good and does fit the book. Would have been interesting if they had blacked out the screen and played the tape from chapter 9. Breakdown on Paradise Blvd. couldn't really expect them to do that though. Also would have liked the airport scene from the end of the book to have been there.

"Ghost in the Shell" Writer, "Akira"'s DiCaprio Interviewed

Shock Till You Drop has posted an interview with Laeta Kalogridis, the current screenwriter for Dreamworks and Steven Spielberg's planned live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell cyber-police manga. Kalogridis was once also hired by James Cameron to script his planned adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) manga. She is also an executive producer and screenwriter on Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" and an executive producer on Cameron's "Avatar".

In the interview Kalogridis confirmed she is still working on the draft of the script for "Ghost in the Shell". When asked if Steven Spielberg came to her to adapt the manga, Kalogridis said, " Dreamworks has the material and I have loved it for years and years and years. They contacted me about it when they found out that I was interested. I mean, there's just no other property quite like it." She also added, the film "could actually be three two-hour movies, which is what I would vote for."

In a separate development, MTV.com posted a clip from a video interview with Appian Way 's Leonardo DiCaprio regarding his next project. When asked if DiCaprio's next project will be the live-action film adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's "Akira" manga or "Twilight Zone", DiCaprio said, "You know, you never want to say anything is going to happen in this town, because everything gets thrown out the window one day and is green-lit the next."

DiCaprio, whose "Shutter Island" film will hit theaters this Friday, explained why neither films are his top priority right now, saying, "It's all about the material at the end of the day, that's why [Shutter Island] is something of a godsend. When you get good material, you have to jump on it and try to make it as best you can, because it is few and far between."

Last week the New York Magazine 's Vulture blog reported that the Hughes brothers — the directors behind "Menace II Society", "Dead Presidents", "From Hell", and "The Book of Eli" — are negotiating with the Warner Brothers movie studio to direct the film.

I always dug the designs and mix of fantasy with this magical girl type show.
It really could be considered a precursor to Escaflowne for the idea of mixing a Shojo type show with some Shonen elements.

Hikaru used to look a little like Girl Ranma every once in a while. (it did not help that I saw them roughly the same time. )

Chris Beveridge recently posted a review for Glass Mask Collection 1. He gave it an "A" overall.

Via AoD/Mania:

Over the first twenty-six episodes, there is an immense amount of ground covered as we get two years worth of stories as Maya grows into being an actress. There are some cruel moments, some incredibly moving moments and numerous areas of simple human drama that propel the story along. The down and dirty nature of the stage is often apparent as various young and older actors despise Maya for a variety of reasons, but in the end none can refute the raw talent that’s there that could change the stage forever. Maya’s one of the most honest characters I’ve seen in awhile where she’s actually layered yet incredibly simple. Watching her work through these challenges, failing here and there and overcoming others, it’s very moving and engaging. This first half of the series is one of the best lengthy things I’ve seen in some time and the next set can’t come fast enough.

It's good to see some more positive reviews for Sentai series. I'm really looking forward to this one!

Hentai : "James and the Giant Peach" was not Burton. Again that was the other master, Henry Selick. I think Burton may have produced it or something, but he really didn't have much to do with it. He wasn't the writer or anything like he was with "Nightmare".

I still don't get why people like this show so much. It's a generic action anime, below average at best. And I'm a madhouse fanboy, so that's saying something. I'll never understand you

But I'm making perfect sense here. This is just a random action title! Why is this so popular and well loved? Why not some other show? It's very silly, has a generic plot, and some really anoying characters. If it's action you want, I could rattle off a list of better titles in the genre. But even the best action titles are still action shows that's really it. It's not like they are very deep or anything. So why the love? For the style I guess? "Ohh cool! Look at that!" . Personally I like substance over style. I don't hate this show, in fact it has it's moments. But I really don't understand why everyone went gaga over this.

Tonka DUDE!! I think you gave me the BEST BEST BEST reasoning as to why this is so popular and well respected yet! Props man! I have yet to hear anyone else give me a better reason. NOW I think I'm starting to understand. After studing review after review of this and bebop and trying to figure out WHAT they liked about this, and why they love it so much, your little post there made so much more sense. No joke I watched JO's review of this and bebop more then a handfull of time to try and figure out WHAT is so good about this. But what you said makes the most sense now. I also have come to the conclusion that after years of shounen action/adventure titles, seeing something like this or Cowboy Bebop would blow your mind. Although that's exactly what happened to me...and it didn't blow my mind. *Shrug*

I own all of El Cazador and Romeo X Juliet and they both would go on a top 5 list of anime released last year, along with Nana . I have like 3 episodes left of Romeo X Juliet before I finish it, great stuff.

A pretty good show. A bloody, violent show when it was called for. Not overly gratuitous, but on the spot. Has a very film-noir feel to it, a retro feel and look to it, like something out of the 70's. It's also one of those show you can't wait for a second season for, but then I remembered:

The first manga is a fairly direct prequel, even the point of having the Skull Man taking his place as the CEO of the corporation he fought to bring down, becoming the evil that he had fought to destroy.

Also, if you read other Ishinomori works, there are clues as to the progression of this sub-plot and how it ripples out through the rest of his works at the time. He loves taking existing characters from his other works, changing their hat and clothes, and having them show up in another doing the exact same crap they always do. Or, in some cases, seeking redemption for roles in his other stories. I really love when he does this with Jet Link, who seems to me to be his closest direct reflection in character. I love that even the good guys are dark and troubled, if you can figure out who the good guys are at any point =). It's one of the things that really draws me to his writing style. These stories would make just as amazing movies or live action series as they would anime because the stories are amazing (Kikaider is a good example of this).

Some day, some forward thinking Anime distributor will buy some of those classic Cyborg 009 movies and series, translate them and release them on DVD. Those are definitive early works in science fiction anime.

Yeah, he and a woman named Charlotte Gainsbourg.

The movie was great. The way they shot the film placed a lot of emphasis on the natural world. It was an extremely mature and disturbing film, and wonderfully put together.

Also, some short blurbs I quickly typed after seeing the movie so I could remember themes to write about for the paper:

I recommend it to anyone interested in the dark recesses of human nature. There's also a lot of gore and sex, so keep that in mind before watching it.

I am buying the anime due to thier player crashing and having to see the same commerical 20 times. It could have been a sublimital message that was placed there.

Evangelion Spandex Bicycle Shorts for Sale
Eva Bike Project's EVA01SPATS made with "sweat-wicking, fast-drying polyester"

The mobile content company Media Magic announced on Monday that it is taking orders for a variety of Evangelion bicycle accessories, including the official EVA01 Spandex Bicycle Shorts . The new items are part of the expanded Evangelion Bike Project that had its roots in 2006's EVA01BIKE bicycle.

The entire project is designed and supervised by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the character designer of Gainax 's original "Neon Genesis Evangelion" television anime series and Hideaki Anno and Khara's ongoing four-part theatrical remake. Besides the "EVA01SPATS" (the Japanese portmanteau of "Spandex tights"), the Evangelion Bike Project now offers "EVA00HELMET type-r", "EVA02HELMET type-a", and "EVABIKE" customization stickers. Like the two Evangelion bicycles that preceded them, these accessories are available from the official mobile sites for Gainax and Evangelion .

According to Media Magic , the EVA01SPATS are made from "sweat-wicking, fast-drying polyester" that is "refreshing to wear even when sweating during intense workouts, with ample elasticity for a comfortable fit."

Unfortunately, that was not a promotion. The developers at ZooVision found a problem within the app's subscription service, so it was disabled from being downloaded in the App Store while they submitted an upgrade and Apple approved it. The app was never meant to be free to download- that apparently was an error that occurred when the app was disabled for download in the App Store.

The Anime Network Mobile app for the iPhone & iTouch, in it's past & current form, is a separate VOD service from both our Cable/Satellite VOD & Online Player services. The $6.95 cost to initially download the app is actually that first month's subscription fee for this mobile VOD service.

We are planning future apps for not only the iPhone/iTouch, but other mobile devices and carriers. More details will be available in the coming months, when these apps are nearing deployment.

We apologize for any confusion that may have been caused by the errors in the App Store the other day, as well as the app being unavailable for a period of time. The team of developers at ZooVision acted as quickly as they could to rectify the problem and get the service back online, so that our users would receive the highest quality service that can be offered.

If anyone has further questions about the Anime Network Mobile app and its subscription service, please feel free to email us at info@theanimenetwork.com or post them here in the forums.
