LA Times: Samuel L. Jackson Joins Oldboy Remake

posted on 2012-08-18 03:55 EDT

Director Spike Lee recruits his Red Hook Summer composer Bruce Hornsby for remake

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Los Angeles Times newspaper reported on Friday that actor Samuel L. Jackson (Jungle Fever, Pulp Fiction, The Avengers) and Grammy-winning musician Bruce Hornsby have joined director Spike Lee's planned remake of the Oldboy film. According to the newspaper's source, Jackson will play a man tortured by the main character; in the original Oldboy film, the visceral scene employed a hammer on the man's teeth, but the remake will have "a different kind of torture."

Hornsby previously worked with Lee on his Kobe Doin' Work documentary and this year's Red Hook Summer film.

Actor Josh Brolin (Milk, Men in Black 3), actor Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team), and actress Elizabeth Olsen (Silent House, Martha Marcy May Marlene) have been attached to this planned remake of Chan-wook Park's live-action film Oldboy, which is itself an adaptation of Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi's manga.

The trade magazine Variety earlier described the Korean film's story about "a man who's kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years. When he's finally released and begins looking into the reason for his captivity, he soon finds out that his kidnapper has even more torturous plans for him." (The original manga has the protagonist imprisoned for a different number of years and does not have the Korean film's added plot twist ending.)

The entertainment trade magazine Variety reported on Tuesday that actor Nate Parker (Red Tails, Red Hook Summer, The Secret Life of Bees) is in negotiations to play a role in Spike Lee's remake of Chan-wook Park's live-action film Oldboy.

Parker is in talks to play a small role of a doctor who works with Elizabeth Olsen's (Silent House, Martha Marcy May Marlene) character.

Actor Josh Brolin (Milk, Men in Black 3), actor Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team), and Olsen have been attached to this planned remake of Chan-wook Park's live-action film Oldboy, which is itself an adaptation of Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi's manga.

FilmDistrict Acquires Spike Lee's Oldboy Remake in U.S.
Drive/Looper distributor licenses new version of Chan-wook Park's manga-based film

The movie distributor FilmDistrict (Drive, Looper, Red Dawn remake) announced at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday that it acquired the rights to release Spike Lee's remake of the 'Oldboy' film in the United States. FilmDistrict acquired the rights from Good Universe, the production company that Mandate Pictures founders Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane had just established earlier this year. Good Universe had already licensed the 'Oldboy' remake's distribution rights for other countries to Universal Pictures.

Actor Josh Brolin ('Milk', 'Men in Black 3'), actor Sharlto Copley ('District 9', 'The A-Team'), and Olsen have been attached to this planned remake of Chan-wook Park's live-action film 'Oldboy', which is itself an adaptation of Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi's manga. The Los Angeles Times reported last month that Samuel L. Jackson ('Jungle Fever', 'Pulp Fiction', 'The Avengers') has joined the cast as well, and another collaborator of Lee's, Nate Parker ('Red Tails', 'Red Hook Summer', 'The Secret Life of Bees'), is in talks.

Variety earlier described the Korean film's story about "a man who's kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years. When he's finally released and begins looking into the reason for his captivity, he soon finds out that his kidnapper has even more torturous plans for him."

The original manga has the protagonist imprisoned for a different number of years and does not have the Korean film's added plot twist ending. Dark Horse Comics published the original manga in North America.

The remake's producers include Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee and Doug Davison, along with Good Universe's Kahane. The executive producers are FilmDistrict CEO Peter Schlessel, Good Universe's Drake, and John Middleton.

Official Synopsis for Spike Lee's Oldboy Revealed
Synopsis indicates notable deviations from South Korean movie; FilmDistrict announced as distributor

US film distributor FilmDistrict has acquired the distribution rights to Spike Lee's upcoming remake of Park Chan-Wook's live-action film 'Oldboy', and with this acquisition has come the first official synopsis of the film. The synopsis in its entirety reads:

OLDBOY follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor's motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and ultimately to an illusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.

Both the number of years Brolin's character has been imprisoned and Olsen's character's occupation have been changed from the original.

In January, Variety reported that production on the film has been delayed until late summer or early fall because of actor Josh Brolin's press commitments for his 'Men in Black 3' film. Brolin is slated to play the male lead in the film.

Mandate Pictures is developing the project with producers Doug Davison and Roy Lee ('The Ring', 'Dark Water' [2005], 'Death Note' and 'Godzilla' remake plans) of Vertigo Entertainment and Lee's 40 Acres & A Mule Productions. Mark Protosevich ('Thor', 'I Am Legend') wrote a script, and Mandate Pictures President Nathan Kahane is serving as executive producer.

Elizabeth Olsen Comments on Oldboy Remake in Interview

Liberal Arts actress discusses differences due to location, technology

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a recent interview with the Empire film magazine, actress Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Liberal Arts) spoke about Spike Lee's remake of Chan-wook Park's live-action film Oldboy.

In the interview, Olsen notes that the film is "going to be a different story, just because one: it takes place in a non-descript city in America and two: it's ten years later, so technology is different, so there's just really practicalities that have had to change."

Olsen added that the remake is "not trying to redo the film – it's coming at it from a different point of view. As well as focusing on the primary source of the Korean film, for our film there's a Japanese manga ... so we're using the primary source of the illustrated novel, really."

In the below recording, the discussion about Oldboy starts at 51:47.

Sinister/Inside Man actor to play doctor who works with Elizabeth Olsen's character

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The entertainment trade magazine Variety reported on Tuesday that actor James Ransone (Sinister, Inside Man, The Next Three Days) will replace actor Nate Parker (Red Tails, Red Hook Summer, The Secret Life of Bees) for Spike Lee's remake of Chan-wook Park's live-action film Oldboy. Ransone had previously worked with Lee on Inside Man and Red Hook Summer.

Parker had been slated to play a small role of a doctor who works with Elizabeth Olsen's (Silent House, Martha Marcy May Marlene) character.

Variety added that Parker left the project due to scheduling conflicts with his commitment for the Non-Stop film where he is starring beside Liam Neeson.

Actor Josh Brolin (Milk, Men in Black 3), actor Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team), and Olsen are attached to this planned remake of Chan-wook Park's live-action film Oldboy, which is itself an adaptation of Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi's manga.

Josh Brolin Comments on Spike Lee's Oldboy Remake

Actor Josh Brolin shared some of his thoughts on Spike Lee's 'Oldboy' remake while promoting his upcoming 'Gangster Squad' film. Brolin confirmed that he finished shooting his scenes for the film, stating that initially he was concerned the film would be a "stinker" due to Lee's unconventional and ultra-violent approach to the material.

He since changed his opinion stating that Lee is a "fantastic" director and he was "blown away" by co-star Elizabeth Olson's performance.

Brolin also stated that the remake's only similarity to Park Chan-Wook's 2003 film is the structure. He followed up by saying:
"It's more of an interpretation than it is a remake. I called Park Chan-Wook myself and I asked him, 'You know, I need your blessing in order to do this, because I won't do this without your full support.' He said, 'Absolutely, just don't do the same movie,' and we're not. I think it's going to turn out brilliant."

'Oldboy' is slated to open October 11, 2013.

Oldboy's Park Confirms No Involvement in Spike Lee's Remake

posted on 2013-03-03 12:26 EST

The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog asked South Korean director Chan-wook Park about Spike Lee's remake of his Oldboy film in an interview posted on Sunday:

Has Spike Lee approached you about his remake of “Oldboy”?

I'm involved in the film as much as how I'd like if I were doing a remake of another filmmaker's film, how I'd like that original filmmaker to be involved in my remake. That, in other words, is nothing. I'm not involved. I don't really want to know anything about it. I want to close my eyes and close my ears to the remake. I want to go to the cinema as soon as it's out and I want to be amazed.

Park's live-action film is itself an adaptation of Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi's Oldboy manga. Lee shot his remake with Josh Brolin (Milk, Men in Black 3), actress Elizabeth Olsen (Silent House, Martha Marcy May Marlene), Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team), Samuel L. Jackson (Jungle Fever, Pulp Fiction, The Avengers), and James Ransone (Sinister, Inside Man, The Next Three Days) last fall.

The remake will open in the United States on October 11.
