Yamato 2199 Not Planned for TV Until 2013 or Later

Space Battleship Yamato 2199, the remake of the first Yamato anime series, will not air in Japan until 2013 or later. The first Blu-ray Disc/DVD volume will go on sale in stores on May 25, after first being sold at theatrical screenings on April 7. Subsequent volumes will also be released on Blu-ray/DVD and in theaters.

The Family Gekijou cable and satellite channel will preview the first episode of the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 television series on April 6 at 9:00 p.m. A special program about the new anime will also run on that day, along with all the episodes of the first two Space Battleship Yamato television series. The first theatrical showing of the first two episodes will follow a day later on April 7. The rest of the episodes will not run on television until 2013 or later.

Yamato 2199, 1st Gundam Film BDs to Have English Subs

Japanese anime distributor Bandai Visual confirmed that the first Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Blu-ray Disc and the DVD reissue of the first Mobile Suit Gundam film trilogy will both have English subtitles. Both will ship in Japan on May 25, although people who watch the theatrical release of the first two Yamato 2199 episodes can buy the first Blu-ray early in April.

2nd film covering episodes 3-6 will premiere in theaters in Japan on June 30

The film distributor Shochiku began streaming a 129-second promotional video on Thursday for the second installment of the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 television anime series and film project. The second film, which will cover episodes 3-6, will open in 10 theaters in Japan on June 30. The Blu-ray Disc and DVD volume of the second film will then ship on July 27.

Yutaka Izubuchi (RahXephon), the 53-year-old animator who worked on mechanical designs and science-fiction concepts on some of the earlier projects in the Yamato franchise, is serving as chief director of this remake of the first series. Nobuteru Yuki (Escaflowne, Record of Lodoss War) is designing the characters, and the anime studios XEBEC and AIC are producing the anime.

The first episode of the television series was previewed on TV on April 6; however, the rest of the episodes will not run on television until 2013 or later. The first Blu-ray Disc/DVD volume, which contains the first two episodes, will ship on Friday.

Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion actor joins cast for 2nd installment premiering June 30

The staff of the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 television anime series and film project announced on Friday that voice actor Kouichi Yamadera will voice Lord Dessler (Leader Desslok in Space Battleship Yamato's American adaptation Star Blazers) in the second installment of the series.

Yamadera, who has voice roles in more than 200 anime, including Ninja Scroll's Jubei Kibagami, Cowboy Bebop's Spike Spiegel, Neon Genesis Evangelion's Ryouji Kaji, and Ghost in the Shell's Togusa, previously voiced Captain Susumu Kodai in the Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection film. Yamadera will be replacing Masatô Ibu in the role of Lord Dessler.

The film distributor Shochiku began streaming a promotional video for the second installment in the series on Thursday.

The second film, which will cover episodes 3-6, will open in 10 theaters in Japan for two weeks starting on June 30. The Blu-ray Disc and DVD volume of the second film will then ship on July 27, and it will also be available for purchase at the theaters showing the film.

We might get lucky and somebody will license it. Main issue is definitely going to be the price for said rights. Definitely have the fandom over here to support the new series. I'd have it on preorder as soon as it's announced. (Personally I'd love for AnimEigo to get the rights, just because they do (imo) the best job with their set releases. Liner Notes FTW!) But just hope somebody gets the rights. If it gets released in North America, I expect it to be subbed only, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Yamato Crew, the official Space Battleship Yamato community, announced on Wednesday that the third Space Battleship Yamato 2199 film will run in 10 Japanese theaters from October 13 to October 26. The third film, titled Hateshinaki Kōkai (Endless Voyage), is composed of episodes 7 through 10 of this Space Battleship Yamato remake.

According to Yamato Crew, the third film will deal with contact with the Galamis (Gamilon) enemy and offer an original story that delves into areas that the first Space Battleship Yamato anime did not explore. Toshihiro Kawamoto revealed at the AM2 convention this month that he worked as an animation director on episode 10.

Fate/Zero, Ghost in the Shell actor joins cast for remake anime's 4th installment

The staff of the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 television anime series and film project announced on Wednesday that voice actor Akio Ohtsuka will play General Domel (General Lysis in Space Battleship Yamato's American adaptation Star Blazers) in the fourth installment of the series.

Ohtsuka's numerous anime voice roles include Fate/Zero's Rider, Ghost in the Shell's Batou, One Piece's Blackbeard, Bleach's Kyouraku Shunsui, and Black Jack's title character. He is also known for voicing video game franchise characters such as Xehanort in Kingdom Hearts and Solid Snake in Metal Gear.

Ohtsuka will be replacing the late voice actor Osamu Kobayashi in the role of General Domel. Kouichi Yamadera is playing Lord Dessler, head of the Gamilus people and General Domel's leader, in Space Battleship Yamato 2199.

Wow, that preview confirmed my suspicion that the Captured Gamilas pilot episode would be an Akira Yamamoto focused episode. Interesting in that Kodai was the focus of that episode in the original.
