Plot Summary:
The anime revolves around two protagonists, Hirono Hiro and Asou Renji. On Christmas Eve, Hirono Hiro meets a girl named Miyamura Miyako who was chasing a purse snatcher. Hiro later finds out that Miyako also goes to the same school as he does and they start hanging out together. This made Hiro's childhood friend, Shindou Kei, feel left out. Kei then tries to compete with Miyako for Hiro's affection and a love triangle ensues. The anime also tells the story of Asou Renji. Renji meets a girl named Shindou Chihiro at an abandoned train station. He soon learns that Chihiro suffers from a type of amnesia where her memory span only lasts for 13 hours. He also discovers Chihiro's dream of writing a novel, but she has never been able to fulfill that dream due to her condition. Renji then decides to help her fulfill that dream.

Plot Summary:
A tale of Melodies is a continuation where the tale of Memories left off. It tells the tale of two couples - Kuze and Mizuki, and Yuuko and Yuu. Alternating between the past and present, as well as two different twin-cities, it reveals the connections all of the characters share, as well as their tragic past...

The anime once again tells two stories. The first story takes place in the past. Himura Yuu meets a girl, Amamiya Yuuko who seems to know him, but he doesn't know her. However, he soon remembers that she was a girl whom he knew from long ago. Yuuko then tells him something which he never knew. He was her first love since then, and her first love has not ended yet. The second story takes place in the present, just after the events of ef - A Tale of Memories. Shuuichi Kuze meets the cousin of Aso Renji, Hayama Mizuki and spends a lot of time with her. Unknown to Mizuki, Kuze had contracted a fatal illness and has little time left to live. Kuze had decided to break all romantic ties, but things go bad when Mizuki tells him that she loves him.

Ah, and I've tried to avoid any major spoliers in the character descriptions, but it's kind of hard to give a meaningul description of some of them without a few minor ones. All of which are revealed early in the series, so my apoligies to those who don't want ANY.

Hiro Hirono - Hiro is a high school student who is actually a working manga-ka. He spends most of his nights up working on his manga, so he doesn't really like waking up and going to school. He is straight forward, and a bit grumpy; often from his lack of sleep.

Miyako Miyamura - Miyako meets Hiro when her purse is stolen, and she begins a relationship with him that turns into a romance. She is a handful, at times petulant and almost always flirty. She also does not like going to school, and is pretty brash about it.

Kei Shindou - Kei is Hiro's childhood friend. She is sassy and at times comical. She is an all-star athlete, and she has a tendency to mother Hiro, even trying to wake him up and force him to go to school. In reality, she is deeply in love with Hiro and has been since childhood. Her jealousy of him resulted in the injury of her twin sister Chihiro. Her world is torn apart when she finds out about the relationship between Hiro and Miyako, and she tires everything she can to end it.

Renji Asuo - Renji is a quite, bookish student at the same school, who thinks he wants to be a writer. He is kind hearted and compassionate, and when he meets Chihiro he decides he's going to help her.

Chihiro Shinduo - Kei's Twin sister. She was hit by a car when she was 12 years old, and the result was a form of amnesia that only allows her to remember things for 13 hours. At the start of the 14th hour she loses the 1st, and so on. She is quiet and shy and comes across as younger than most of the others, even though she is the same age. She constantly writes in her diary, as it is the only way she has of having a memory.

Yu Humura - Yu is a kind of a care taker for Chihiro, and is very protective of her. While he is a nice man, there is a sadness to him. So, there is a part of him that desperately needs to help Chihiro or aid the person who will be able to help her, but he is very protective of her and at first dubious of Renji.

Kyosuke Tsutsumi - Kyosuke is a student at the same high school; he is the same age as Hiro and Renji. At the start he is part of the school’s film club, but breaks away from them quickly as their goals are only to win contests, and he is much more concerned with the art and the artistic integrity of the work. He sees Kei early on and decides to shoot a movie about her, in doing so he comes to care for her very much.

Yuko Amamiya - Yuko is seen briefly by each character. She is mysterious and more often than not tells the characters what they NEED to hear instead of what they WANT to hear, but even her questions lead to uneasy answers for them. While there is an air of mystery to her, there is also an air of lightness and compassion.

Mizuki Hayama - Mizuki is a little younger than Kei, and is very much in love with her. She is fun and at times a bit of a gossip, but she is caring and even tries to help Kei in winning over Hiro (because she's that sure that one day Kei will be hers.)

Sumire Asuo - Renji's mother, she looks and sounds almost young enough to be is sister. She's very fun and has an off beat sense of humor. She doesn't mean to embarass her son but often does. It is very obvious how close they are and how much she cares about him.

Kuze - A neighbor and friend to Renji and Sumire, he is a bit of a playboy and plays up that image, but is actually a very kind hearted man.

Izumi - She is the president of the film club and Koysuke's girlfriend, but his irrational behavior causes them to break up. She is young, but pretty much no nonsense.
