The Coffee God: Very true and I mentioned that in my original post, and it was many times noted in MIKE FERREIRA's editorial that it's just what ADV claims in the legal documents. I failed to type that out though in this post, heh. I've typed it so many times by now though lol... BUT I do believe a lot of what they say, especially if you look over all those documents like I did, you start to see exactly what ADV is saying. But not being there, I can't say what is true and what is not. You're very right.

The part that was really frustrating about the whole situation is that ADV did try to work out a deal with Bandai to finish the dub. The sub-only singles didn't need to happen, and even Bandai admitted that they hurt the sales of the series. We know that at least the first five episodes were complete done. That would have been enough for Bandai to release the first single with a dub and allow ADV to continue work on the rest. Instead, they started from square one and delayed everything even longer.

I suspect that Matt Greenfield wasn't too broken up about Bandai going under. I'm picturing him with the trademark Kira Smile (from Death Note) right now.

If only the Sentai dubbed episodes of Gurren Lagaan were available to watch (with the dub)...they aren't, are they??

I would like to point out however, this, is basically hearsay, as this is what ADV is claiming happened in their docs on HCDC in both the FUNi case and the older Sojitz case.

Would Sentai lie to us?

Nope their was rumors they got as far as to press review copies ,but as far as I know if they did no one has one. I think as far as any of us saw was one episode subbed up here on the old site and a "trailer" on one of the ADV releases. Don't remember which.

There was an article a few weeks back, I believe it was on ANN, talking about shows and movies with multiple English dubs. The topic of Gurren Lagan came up and one of their reviewers stated they had a preview disc with the first five episodes, but hadn't watched it since the license transferred to Bandai. So they at least go some preview discs sent out, and I believe a few episodes were also shown at a few smaller anime conventions. Other than the one disc we know ANN has, I don't think there are any other copies.

They might be floating around in digital format, much like the dubbed "pilot" episodes we received on VOD from the Enoki titles TAN had awhile ago.
But getting ahold of them might be nigh impossible.

Brutal. This is the kind of thing that someone needs to leak (is it really a leak after all these years?) onto the internet. I'd pay for it, legally. Shoot, I bought Gintama: the Movie as a surrogate. I've seen the trailer on YouTube, but that's as much of Sentai's Gurren Lagaan as I've managed to see.

Though if Sentai loses and is forced to pay out this exorbitant sum, instead of having one or 2 lost ADV releases we could have dozens. Maybe Funimation would rescue-release them all, out of the "goodness" of its heart?

edit: Maybe ANN could leak out that review copy? This is one of the few things left to see on my "to watch" anime bucket list, up there with Sentai's Sgt. Frog with David Wald as the main char and Vic Mignogna's live-action FMA movie.

What? Seriously ?

Case closed The ARM @%#$ed itself.

I did some of the research and writing of this
www.animeherald.com/2012/01/31/adv-v-arm...two-anime-companies/

Pretty much Sojitz from the beginning went into this with aims to make a quick buck and get out, not the long term goals ADV had. Sojitz took control of specific areas of ADV, and had complete control of how much ADV paid on licenses during the era. During this time charging ADV a large amount of fees. Then when sales were not magical, and profits were not what they "wanted", they took their titles and left, then sold them to FUNimation making a quick buck.

*ponders* I wonder what Dragoon would say about all this...
I think he left the fandom.

Yeah none of us have seen or heard from him since the one last time he was here over 2 years ago now.

And here I am a refugee from the Model Railroad wing of Geekdom. That part of the larger fandom arena, along with model building as a whole, has been on this same self destructive path for the past 10 years or so.

Lawsuits between companies no larger than Funimation or Sentai, between US companies and Korean or Chinese manufacturers. Soaring prices and a nagging non-availability of basic products. Oh, and a declining aging fan base with sporatic outreach to younger generations.

I've put all my hobby money into Anime & Manga for over a year now. It will be a while still, but I anticipate a general collapse in my other hobby's world that will settle things out. Then we will see.

What's happening here is mild compared to where I came from.

I saw Vic's live-action FMA movie at Megacon several years ago. It was a surprisingly well done film which you don't have to be a big FMA fan to enjoy. Recommended if you can catch it.
