‘Hobbit’ Films Get Titles, Release Dates

The press release has made its way out today in which we learn at long last what the two formal names of the movies will be for the theatrical adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein's "The Hobbit". The first movie is now set for release on December 14th, 2012 and will be called "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" while the second film will be out on December 13th, 2013 and will be called "The Hobbit: There and Back Again". Both titles are definitely a good fit and have a certain flair that definitely fits with the style of the book and the world the characters inhabit.

New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM have announced the titles and release dates for filmmaker Peter Jackson’s two-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's enduringly popular masterpiece "The Hobbit". The first film, titled "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey", will be released on December 14, 2012. The second film, titled "The Hobbit: There and Back Again", is slated for release the following year, on December 13, 2013.

Both films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s "The Lord of the Rings" which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King". The adventure of "The Hobbit" follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

Under Jackson’s direction, both movies are being shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and Martin Freeman, who just won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the BBC series "Sherlock", takes on the central role of Bilbo Baggins. Also reprising their roles from "The Lord of the Rings" movies are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum. The ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) Richard Armitage, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas and Aidan Turner.

The screenplays for "The Hobbit" films are by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson. Jackson is also producing the films, together with Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham. The executive producers are Ken Kamins and Zane Weiner, with Philippa Boyens serving as co-producer.

"The Hobbit" films are productions of New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing being handled by MGM.

Why are Frodo, Legolas, and others from LotR in this movie? It's been a while since I read The Hobbit, but I'm pretty sure they did not exist. The synopsis for the movie even claims that the setting is 60 years prior to the Lord of the Rings series.

I also heard a rumor that David Tennant would be in the movie somehow, so I'm a little disappointed to not see his name in the cast, but STEPHEN FRY is a pleasant surprise.

Don't know if it's changed since it was first announced many years ago or not, but the way it was orginally going to be was, one part covers The Hobbit the other part covers the time space between The Hobbit and LotR.
That was the original plan at least, and why there were two parts.

Ah, that makes sense. So I guess the order of release goes backwards in chronology, since "There and Back Again" is the alternative title of the actual book, and that is released last.

As far as I can tell the elven actors are likely reprising their elven roles for the battle of seven armies, with Saruman meeting with Gandalf to confront the Necromancer at his tower during the Mirkwood Arc of the story. Remember Legolas was the Prince of Mirkwood, and therefore the son to the Elf King whom the dwaves beseech. Frodo will likely be the narrator at somepoint for the ending. Also, Frodo was, at the time of the lord of the rings like 50 when he started his journey if I recall properly. I know bilbo was.so there was a thirty year gap between the start of the lord of the rings and when the actual journey started, I think, since frodo was the same age as bilbo was when he set out on his there an back again adventure. Gandalf went to Gondor to research the ring and was gone for years before he came to frodo its confusig for me but the old took was 140 years old I think and bilbo lived past that and it was on his eleventy first birthday that lord of the rings starts to takes place and frodo was in his tweens, meaning twenties...I am not entirely clear right now since I don't have my LotR books with me...

its a little convoluted but perhaps that is how it ends, is with Elijah wood finishing the story aor narrating the story as Bilbo had written.

Although I don't know why they don't have Gimli reprising his role simply as one of the dwarf soldiers from the Iron Hills

I have two main concerns.

1. I want Smaug to be truly impressive.
2. Dwarves are not comedy relief and that goes double for Thorin Oakenshield.
"Flandre, no Molotov cocktails indoors, please." - Hime from Princess Resurrection
"Dutch, I know what I want for Christmas." - Revy from Black Lagoon

That one, is my main concern.
Not only visually, but vocally as well.

That's one of the things I loved most (besides the soundtrack) about the Rankin & Bass version of The Hobbit.
Smaug, as voiced by Richard Boone was just so impressive to hear.

New Photos From ‘The Hobbit’

Posted by Chris Beveridge

Nothing makes a day better than for there to be some new images from The Hobbit as being worked on by Peter Jackson. The folks at Entertainment Weekly managed to nab a trio of pictures with some descriptions about what’s going on that really makes for a good read when you realize the scale of the project that they’re working on. The first movie is set for December 14th, 2012 while the second is set for December 13th, 2013. The pictures that made their way out this time around show off Martin Freeman and Ian McKellan which continues to be a real delight to see in the role of Gandalfy.

Plot summary: The Hobbit follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever… Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

''He fits the ears, and he's got some very nice feet,'' Jackson says of his Bilbo. ''I think he's got the biggest hobbit feet we've had so far. They're a little bit hard to walk in, but he's managed to figure out the perfect hobbit gait.''

''He's in fantastic form,'' Peter Jackson says of McKellan. ''In a way, his role in The Hobbit has more technical difficulties than Lord of the Rings did, because he has scenes with 14 smaller characters — obviously the dwarves and the hobbit are shorter... I remember saying to him (laughs

''There's no way you can pace yourself for shoots like these,'' Jackson says. ''When we were going through the schedule for The Hobbit, I felt a terrible drop in my stomach when I saw that we'd be shooting for 254 days. We're only 12 days short of The Lord of the Rings even though we're only doing two movies. When I saw that, I had to sort of pick myself up off the floor and carry on.''

First look at the Dwarves.

DORI, NORI & ORI
These three brothers, all sons of the same mother, could not be more different from each other. Dori, the oldest, spends much of his time watching out for Ori, the youngest; making sure he’s not caught a chill or got himself killed by Wargs or Goblins. Nobody quite knows what Nori gets up to most of the time, except that it’s guaranteed to be dodgy and quite probably, illegal. Dori, Nori and Ori are intensely loyal to each other – and whilst they are perfectly happy fighting amongst themselves, woe-betide anyone who means harm to one of these brothers.

I'm really looking forward to this, as I enjoyed The Hobbit much more than LOTR. But I'm a little leery of the 48FPS. I know it will make it look more realistic, but I'm not sure this is a film I want to look super life-like. I prefer a little bit of that cinema magic.

OIN & GLOIN
Distant cousins of Thorin Oakenshield, these two doughty Northern Dwarves join the Company out of a sense of loyalty to their kin, and also because they have a substantial sum of money invested in the venture. Along with Bombur, Gloin is the only other married Dwarf in the Company (there being a shortage of female dwarves in general). His wife is an acclaimed beauty with a particularly fine beard. Gloin is the proud father of a young son, Gimli, who will go on to become part of the famous Fellowship of the Ring.

Two of the youngest Dwarves, Fili and Kili have been born into the royal line of Durin and raised under the stern guardianship of their uncle, Thorin Oakensheild. Neither has ever travelled far, nor ever seen the fabled Dwarf City of Erebor. For both, the journey to the Lonely Mountain represents adventure and excitement. Skilled fighters, both brothers set off on their adventure armed with the invincible courage of youth, neither being able to imagine the fate which lies before them.

Only 3 more to go!

(L-r) Stephen Hunter as Bombur, James Nesbitt as Bofur and William Kircher as Bifur in New Line Cinema's and MGM's fantasy adventure The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

While most of the Company of Thorin Oakensheild is related to the royal and noble line of Durin, Bofur, his brother Bombur and their cousin Bifur most definitely are … not. Born and bred in the West, descendants of coal miners and iron workers, they have joined the Quest for the Lonely Mountain partly to seek their fortune and partly because they were told the beer was free.

Looks like they're going to have Thorin by himself (or with non-dwarven characters)

Next up is...

newsfeed.time.com/2011/07/15/time-exclus...om-the-hobbit-movie/

(L-R) Ken Stott as Balin and Graham McTavish as Dwalin

Dwarf Lords in their own right, Balin and Dwalin are close relatives of Thorin. Beyond this, these brothers are two of his most loyal and trusted friends. An old warrior, Balin has lived through hard times and fought many battles, yet he harbors doubts about the wisdom of the Quest to retake the Lonely Mountain. Dwalin has no such forebodings – his belief in Thorin’s leadership is unshakeable. A powerful and bruising fighter, with a natural tendency to distrust anyone who is not a Dwarf, particularly anyone who might be an Elf, Dwalin is not someone to cross lightly.

Is he the last Dwarf not pictured?

Cancel that. I decided to actually count.

Maybe the last ones will all be a one picture deal.

Yeah, he's the last one.
And now that I think about it, logically, they'd have to have him by himself and not with other non-dwarven characters, to keep the illusional aspect ratio of character size.

Funny you should mention the group shot though, various people have been Photoshopping the pics together as they've been coming out.

Here's what it looks like thus far.
