What do you mean no? My opinion doesn't count? What happened to the times anime was dubbed? I want to go back to those times.

you asked for Dub, someone said "no"....

its the eternal Dub vs Sub fight is all. Sub fans neglect people with poor eyesight and people who dont want to have to READ a TV until they get much older and have to...they only think about what they want and respond in kind...same as those who prefer dub.

so Hornet, doesnt like Dubs and prefers Subs is all it means.

Whoa there, don't go saying things like that. I like them both equally. What I'm saying "no" to, is the idea that every dub should be done the same way as Funimation. I'm saying "no" to the idea of re-dubbing every song in an anime. I'm saying "no" because spaceshotx7 made a thread with very similar points in it 2 weeks ago. (in which both Inphy and Tager made good points as to why things aren't the way you would like them to be).
You are welcome to your own opinions spaceshot, and your opinions do matter. My "no" is just another way of saying that I disagree with your opinion.

Spaceshot, i'm going to go ahead and copy/paste your own thread to you, along with my response. Perhaps you didn't read it, or maybe you ignored it. I'm not sure. So here it is!

Hi,

When sentai filmworks aquires anime, whatever it gets dubbed or not seems to be random. Shouldn't they dub in house instead of having to hire an outside studio so dubs can be cheaper? I think they have to be capable of dubbing all anime, because how can they be able to Mass license soo much anime?

Another annoying thing is that if there is any singing, the voice goes from english to the japanese voice actor from when he or she starts singing, till he or she stops singing, and then switches back. (In funimation dubs, the singing remains in english by the english voice actor). I find that weird for a dub. I really think that the singing should be in english by the actual voice actor (if she can't sing, have another english actor with a simular voice do it).

I want to see all anime dubbed and any singing done by the characters be in english in the dubbed version.

Hi there, Spaceshot.

I work with Seraphim Digital, which is where most of Sentai Filmwork's anime gets its dubs. Iron K. Tager was correct-- It's all about money.

When you stop and look at the numbers, Anime itself is a very niche title. In the grand scheme of things, (As quoted by David Williams) selling 10,000 copies used to be considered "doing alright". Now, with everything going on and the economy as-is, even 3,000 copies sold is considered a big hit. Keeping that in mind, it has to be taken into consideration whether or not the series will sell well enough to not only cover the cost of dubbing, but to somehow make a PROFIT so that other series' can receive a dub.

It's unfortunate, but no one can tell the future. Many factors play into this-- Popularity overseas, online streaming numbers, Number of episodes, amount of characters, number of lines and etc. Based on all of those numbers, it is determined whether a series will sell enough to warrant a dub.

Take the pretty popular show Demon King Daimao. Initially, this series was NOT going to get a dub. Over the course of a few months, its popularity grew tremendously. Thus, it was decided by popular demand that it would receive one.

Smaller titles, like Hidamari Sketch, rarely sell well. That doesn't mean it's not a good series! In fact, it's my FAVORITE series! However, as you can see, it simply comes down to cold hard cash. Money, in this case, would be LOST on this series.

Money, my dear Spaceshot, makes the world go 'round! Support your favorite series' with your wallet!

To sum everything up: It's not truly "random." A bunch of factors play into it, the biggest ones being "How well will this series sell?" and "How popular is this?"

I hope I answered at least one of your questions clearly.

Everything I post is my own opinion.

God forbid someone makes enough money to live a decent life. 1 in every 10 people in the US make a 6 figure salary. It's not as uncommon as you might think. I have no idea what anyone at TAN makes, but making 6 figures as a CEO of a company is standard practice.

God forbid someone reads a line of text or two on a screen and learns more of another language in the process, for that matter.

I mean that's what kills me in the sub vs dub debate - the same people who read manga volumes complain about reading a couple lines on their screen where they don't even have to flip the pages to continue.

And I too am tired of people being villified for making a profit. That's what a company is for - to make a profit by producing some kind of product or service. Not to give someone a job; not to give you a deal on anime; not to give you free swag. If it can't make money, it shuts down and you have nothing.

When sentai filmworks aquires an anime, how do they decide whatever the anime will be dubbed or not? How do they determan if a particular anime will be dubbed or not?

I happen to know quite a bit about Sentai and many of the people working there. Many of the admins here, and some of the mods, can make the same claim. I can assure you that this is not the case here.

Sentai acquires a ton of anime. They don't dub every show they acquire, but the shows they acquire and release sub-only either have to be released that way, or they wouldn't be released at all. It takes sales of about 10,000 units just to break even on the dubbing expense. Many of Sentai's sub-only series are selling about 3,000 units. They would lose a ton of money if they attempted to dub them all.

Also, Sentai is one of the biggest distributors of English language anime in North America right now. In fact, they release more dubbed series than Viz, Media Blasters, and everyone else buy Funimation put together. Actually, most months they release more new and more new dubbed material than Funimation. Over all, they release quite a few more new series than Funimation every year and they've been acquiring more content than nearly every other North American distributor put together.

Sentai releases shows that no one else would touch and does so in a much more timely manner than Funimation. They may not dub everything, but their more popular shows get dubbed. If you want to encourage something getting dubbed, then watch the streams and encourage your friends to do the same.

Also, as far as the music dubbing goes, that is far more difficult than just dubbing straight dialogue. It's why many, if not most, dubs don't attempt to do it. Also, with more popular shows like Angel Beats, the licensor, in that case Sentai, is often prohibited from dubbing the songs into English. There is always a Japanese record company on the production committee and they always believe that they have the next international pop superstar.

And besides, dubbing everything, as Funi does, doesn't seem like a good idea: just look at their S.A.V.E. line; show that, according to them, didn't meet expectations. Did they really think re-dubbing Initial D was really going to boost sales for a 14 to 6 year old show.

No wonder they're not licensing more of the newer shows and instead going for the "bigger" stuff, I.e. Last Exile/Eureka sequal, that's were all their money went. That and their BD/DVD combos...

So when a show is licensed, they first go take a look at how many people were watching fansubs of the show before they were licensed, coupled with the viewership in japan, and based on that, they decide whenever the show will get a dub or not.

Also, so even for a 5-20 second song without music (acapella), they can't even dub? Every single line that is sung, even a few words, can't be dubbed, even of it doesn't count as an inset song?

I know all singing that the characters do in an episode is dubbed in Funimation dubs. Don't know how they can do that, and no one else? And how come in an episode of Haruhi Suzumiya, the two insert songs the character sung in a band was dubbed?

They don't look at fansubs at all, what gave you that idea?

As for dubbing songs...

I take it you weren't satisfied with the answers these people gave you six months ago?

Re: I wish there would be more dubs just like Funimation Entertainment. 10 months, 2 weeks ago #123240

Then I don't know how they determine if an anime aquired will be dubbed or not?

Re: I wish there would be more dubs just like Funimation Entertainment. 10 months, 2 weeks ago #123241

And as for the singing, even iof there was a 10 second song acapella, everytime a character sings, it will always go to subs untill the singing stops? So the English voice actor never sings.
