TOPIC: Section 23's Con plans?

Section 23's Con plans? 11 months, 1 week ago #118956

I see that Section 23 has a booth at otakon this year. Last year I only remember them having a small table. Does Section 23 have bigger plans for otakon this year?

I hope so, as the trade-show like nature of otakon means that otakon requires corporate funding to be epic, and right now otakon is without one of its biggest sponsors.

They are having a panel at Anime Expo again this year, though the date and time aren't finalized. I imagine they will have one at Otakon as well. However, it seems that Sentai's panels are often scheduled at the last moment.

With Otakon, it seems that everything is often scheduled at the last moment and nothing goes to plan...ever. Experiencing a cluster~~~~ of epic proportions at Otakon is like a rite of passage, or something

My point being that if Sentai has a panel at Otakon, Otakon probably won't let us know until they post the schedule, which is generally the week of the event. Any other reliable source of intel is faster than Otakon. It's brutal and irks me each and every year as they seem to get slower and slower.

If Sentai is planning to do a panel, that would be worth doing Otakon for.

You can attempt emailing Sentai and ask them. That's how it was confirmed that they would be holding a panel at Anime Expo.

In my experience, most anime conventions end up being giant clusterfucks of epic proportions. I love going to a panel, only to find out it was moved across the building at the last minute, so that by the time I get there, the room is already full.

Or even "better"-you get to the room and find out the panel is canceled because not enough people showed up (of course, they were all trying to get to the new location!)

Re: Section 23's Con plans? 11 months, 1 week ago #119109

The bigger the convention, the bigger the screw ups are, and the more frequently they occur, I've found.

After over half a decade, otakon still hasn't figured out the idiocy of putting 2 back to back huge-draw events in the same room with a poorly planned and executed room clear between. After the infamous "otaku sit in" of 2006 I would have thought they'd learned, but they tried to pull that crap again last year. Luckily Bandai reportedly talked some sense into them. Room clears like that at otakon mean that if you see the first event, you won't have a chance in hell of seeing the second.

With their discount prereg period about to end with only one English VA announced and their legendary propensity for screw ups I'm sorely tempted to not go, fwiw. A Sentai panel could fix that. Shoot, I don't know how familiar y'all are with otakon's programming but Bandai brought a lot of it, so if other companies don't step up to the plate I don't know if I want to see the results.

Also, to clarify: when I mentioned colossal screw ups at otakon being a "rite of passage" I meant it only for otakon attendance, that is, "if you haven't encountered a royal, convention-breaking "wtf came up with this?!" screw up at otakon, then you haven't been to otakon"

Nice, glad to see that they're continuing their trend of doing panels at smaller cons. Sadly I won't be at awa.

Well, the odds of me being able to attend another Sentai panel are increasing. Too bad they weren't hitting cons with such frequency when I was going across the country doing cons. Oh well.

Now if the Powers that Be could start sending Matt Greenfield to cons, and publicizing it, I think that'd be a great next step

Matt Greenfield doesn't technically work for Sentai. He runs Switchblade/Maiden Japan and occasionally directs shows for Seraphim.

Does anyone know if Sentai/Section 23/Maiden Japan/Switchblade has any plans to be at Izumicon in Oklahoma City this November?

The Anime Network Panel at NYCC 2012

Presenters were VP of The Anime Network Stacy Dodson and online content manager Samantha Stevens.

Before the panel, raffle tickets and tarot cards from 'Persona 4' were handed out. The crowd was reminded that various dubbed Sentai Filmworks titles were being screened around the con. The panel led with an Anime Network teaser reel that highlighted 'Persona 4' (Sentai's "featured title" for this con, complete with Chie and Rise cosplayers), 'Majikoi', 'Horizon', and 'Heaven's Memo Pad'. There was a cheer for 'Kids on the Slope'.

The second video celebrated TAN's 10th anniversary with flashes of footage from titles the channel was running in its early days ('Godannar', 'Kenshin'), and transition footage the channel used to use, to the soothing tones of 'Detroit Metal City's Satsugai.

From here the panel took a simple pattern of introducing an English-dubbed title and running a brief clip from it. No new announcements were made. 'Persona 4', which uses the cast from the videogame, of course led. Other titles included 'Children Who Chase Lost Voices', 'Heaven's Memo Pad', 'Horizon', 'This Boy Can Fight Aliens!', and 'Majikoi – Oh! Samurai Girls'.

It was mentioned that it was only because of the success of some of these titles in their subtitled streaming runs, like 'Un-Go', that Sentai saw fit to do English dubs. This was also referenced as being the criteria for Sentai releasing Blu-Rays of a title, as they are expensive to produce.

The panel was closed out with further reminders of what will be on the channel in coming months. TAN will be running 'From the New World', 'BTOOOM!', 'Medaka Box Abnormal', and 'Girls und Panzer' online. 'Mayo Chiki!' and 'Idolm@ster Xenoglossia' will also go up.

After we were encouraged to contact our cable companies, the panel ended and the raffle began.

Guess I'll just go to the Wanamaker Gun Show (the world's largest) at Tulsa's Quik Trip Expo Center that weekend, then.

Let me guess.

Not going to Ohayocon either, are you?

Re: Section 23's Con plans? 7 months, 1 week ago #127594

Ohayocon has Tiffany Grant, that's pretty cool, and almost sorta kinda like having Sentai. If only they had Matt Greenfield as well...

Brutal. Izumicon looked pretty cool last year, having Sentai and "old school" voice actress Christine Auten (!!) but now the guest list is very different. I don't like it when cons insist on having completely new guest lists each year. On a tangent, there's one con near me that prides itself on never inviting a guest more than once. This is highly annoying, almost as annoying as the "trend" I'm seeing this year of anime cons loading up on guests who have almost no relation to anime, but I'm getting way off subject here

Re: Section 23's Con plans? 6 months, 4 weeks ago #128082

It looks like Sentai will have a panel at nekocon this year, reprising their surprise appearance from last year.

Wish that news had gotten out sooner. Luckily I'll still be there but I don't see why Sentai doesn't spread the word about its appearances.

Re: Section 23's Con plans? 6 months, 4 weeks ago #128089

Ouch, it looks like nekocon is running their Sentai panel against other events, events to which I am compelled to go. That's brutal.

Sentai will be there, but odds are high that i won't be. Y'all will have to cover for me lol.
