It looked as if things would be able to be resolved with her daughter. I agree with you about the helpers ShawnMerrow. And it was nice to find out a little about Ren. I also liked that he thinks of his co-workers as family - even if they didn't hear him.

I figured Michiyo wasn't Rina's real mother, but once I heard the whole story, I had to feel bad for all three of them. Masato made a lousy fiancé and wasn't supportive at all. It was obvious that Michiyo was holding the button or whatever it was that Rina had given her as a child, so she couldn't have hated Rina as much as she thought she did.
