Gintama licensed by Sentai Filmworks and Section23 Films!

About: (via Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gin_Tama)
Gin Tama ("Silver Soul") is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi and serialized, beginning in December 8, 2003, in Shueisha's Weekly Sh?nen Jump. Set in an Edo which has been conquered by aliens named Amanto, the plot follows life from the point of view of samurai Gintoki Sakata, who works as a freelancer alongside his friends Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura in order to pay the monthly rent. Sorachi added the science fiction setting to develop characters to his liking after his editor suggested doing a historical series.

The manga has been licensed by Viz Media in North America. In addition to publishing the individual volumes of the series, Viz serialized its first chapters in their Shonen Jump manga anthology. It debuted in the January 2007 issue, and was serialized at a rate of one chapter a month. An original video animation (OVA) of Gin Tama by Sunrise was featured at Jump Festa 2006 Anime Tour in 2005. This was followed by a full anime series which debuted on April 4, 2006 in TV Tokyo and is ongoing as of 2009. Besides the anime series, there have been various light novels and video games based on Gin Tama.

In Japan, the Gin Tama manga has been popular, commonly ranking within the Top Ten of best seller series. The anime and its DVDs have also been featured, at various time, in Top Ten of their respective media, while TV Tokyo has announced that the Gin Tama anime was responsible for high sales overseas along with the anime adaptation from Naruto. Publications for manga, anime and others have commented on the Gin Tama manga. Positive response have focused on the comedy and characters from the series, while negative responses concern the manga's artwork.

Everyone says this is a big show, so who am I to doubt them? I never heard of it before tho (I think Zac mentioned it on their podcast...but that was it). What do you think about this Dragoon? Big pick up? Was this a great licenses for them (I mean you think it will sell well? It's a very long show...)?

As I said in the other thread: It's been a blockbuster manga seller and TV Tokyo's largest property along with Naruto and Bleach.

This is Sentai's biggest new title acquisition of the decade aside from Gurren Lagann and Devil May Cry.

In that sense Sentai Filmworks and Section23 have landed a big title to show the Japanese production companies they are very much in the game - which might be one of their main reasons to license this. A lot of industry insiders are shocked how Sentai was able to get it.

Regardless, Sentai and Section23 have certainly made a bold statement today.

Now the question is will it match how big of a title this is on paper and translate to DVD sales... That no one knows. Especially since it's been on CR, that does devalue the title a bit in terms of selling, and it remains to be seen how this will do sub-only without a TV deal to open up a new market of buyers.

Maybe because it was/is on CR and as you said, it's devalued it's DVD sales potential, Sentai/S23 prob got it for less than normaly expected. Hell, maybe CR is realizing their's no real profit with their streaming experiment or the studios/production committees aren't seeing the revenue they were hoping for that they're falling back on the tried-n-tru formula for success - DVD's.

So that being said, and if they did get it for less, it will do quite well for S/S23.
But that...is my opinion.

Let's see, what else in on CR that they can get...hmmmmm....

wow this a huge pickup for S23. Bravo.

Yes I've already seen 140 or so episodes on CR, but I'll watch them all again once they're dubbed. =)
