If you're planning on staying safe and sound at home tonight, then these shows should keep you on the edge of your seat with at least one light turned on (or with the lights off and the sound blasting if you're into that!). The spookiest time of the year has arrived, and we're ready to help you through the night unscathed and intact with a sweet top 5 list of scary anime you can enjoy today for FREE! If you're planning on staying safe and sound at home tonight, then these shows should keep you on the edge of your seat with at least one light turned on (or with the lights off and the sound blasting if you're into that!). Make sure to have your candy and snacks ready, it's going to be a long night: #5 High School of the Dead What would a list like this be without a little zombie action? High School of the Dead borrows heavily from the tried and true horror movie formula of "sexy girls and gory ghouls", which makes it the perfect candidate show to watch Halloween night. Zombies have taken over and a group of scrappy teenagers have to find a way to survive the end of the world as they know it. Sounds good, no? The Zeds are shuffling through by the thousands, so it'll be a tough road for these guys, but I'm sure having a group of well endowed beauties (who routinely get dressed and undressed throughout the show) will help our hero Komuro and his gun toting friend Hirano cope with the situation. I'm sure it'll help you too, wink wink.

#4 Dusk maiden of Amnesia This one is a bit tricky to list, since it's not technically a horror anime, more like horribly funny with its fair share of scary moments. Dusk maiden is one of those shows with a very serious plot that will suck you in, but also has some serious comedic chops that are generously sprinkled throughout. Yuko Kanoe was left to die in an abandoned part of her school, and now she haunts the halls, trying to figure out what led to her inexplicable death. Meanwhile, Teiichi Niiya stumbles into her while taking a wrong turn and gets sucked into the mystery behind her death, joining up with the Paranormal Investigation Team that YUKO resides in as president. Thing is, only Niiya seems to be able to see or hear her! Try not to take this one too seriously, you may even want to watch this one last to give you a few chuckles before you turn in. #3 Ghost Hound The name just screams Halloween, doesn't it? Ghost Hound is Production I.G.'s Anniversary Project, so you know it will be something special. A mystery story with paranormal undertones, Ghost Hound is sure to make you jump in fright at least once. Three boys with traumatic pasts have learned to let their souls cross between their world and the "Unseen World". As the name suggests, this place is hidden from the real world and the home of ghosts, who are now able to cross over, just like our three heroes. What unravels then is a mystery that threatens to tear both worlds apart. With a slow, deliberate pacing, Ghost Hound is the perfect companion for a post midnight marathon.

#2 Hell Girl Series Ai Enma is a little girl on a hellish mission: become the embodiment of revenge itself, and offer up vengeance in exchange for (what else) your soul. This twisted messenger of chaos is the link that connects every episode of the Hell Girl series, as each episode is a story arc on its own. You'll never guess what lengths people go to for revenge, but you'll catch a glimpse of the lowest depths of the human condition while watching this show, guaranteed. Each episode introduces you to a new seeker of revenge/victim for Ai Enma to contact. What begins as a wish to bring pain and suffering, ends with a plea to spare their lives. It's just the way Ai operates, so you won't want to miss a single minute of Hell Girl Seasons 2 & 3! Hell Girl: Two Mirrors and Hell Girl: Three Vessels are both available to watch for free in Japanese with English subtitles.

#1 Another We couldn't possibly give the top spot to any other show than this one. Another is one of the darker shows we have on the site, and along with Elfen Lied, one of the bloodiest. If you're a horror fan looking for buckets upon buckets of the red stuff, then this show's your stop. The deaths in each episode are pretty gruesome, and sometimes completely unbelievable. Somehow, the show manages to fit in an intriguing story along with the gallons of blood and freakish fatalities, one that will keep you watching to the bitter end. There is a secret that the class isn't telling new transfer student Kouichi, and a mysterious girl named Mei Misaki that may hold the key to it all. Their fates become intertwined as their fellow classmates succumb to gruesome deaths, one after the other, but still they must find a way to halt the deadly dirge that looms over their school. Definitely worthy of our top spot!
