The City Ship Musashi, docking in Mikawa.

The story of Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere comprises a number of different locations, characters, elements and events.  So much so that a few of you seem overwhelmed.  In order to help you guys out, we'll be providing you with a bit of a backstory, comprising the history of the show up until the first episode.  Sound good?  Here we go!

Aoi Toori, our Hero.

The story of Horizon is set in a far future where humanity has suffered the loss of "paradise" and are banished back to Earth.  The reason?  Excessive warring and strife, things that humans are unfortunately great at.  After returning to Earth, they realize that it has become a wasteland, and the only habitable place is "The Far East", otherwise known as Japan.

In order to make room for the rest of the world that wasn't Japanese (as they called dibs on their country apparently), they created a sort of "pocket dimension" for the rest of the world to live in.  This mini universe would be known as the "Harmonic Divine States", whereas the original Earth, and by proxy The Far East, would come to be known as "the Divine States".

With a desperate hope to return to their paradise of old, they decide that the only way to achieve that is to re-create the past, using a mysterious artifact known as the book of Testament, and begin doing so in earnest.

Representatives of Tres Espana, or Spain, which is part of the Harmonic Divine States.

Unfortunately, during this recreation period, something happened between the two states that caused a rift between them, and an eventual war known as the "Harmonic Unification War", which led to the Harmonic Divine States splitting up the Far East for themselves and exiling the native people.

The former inhabitants of The Divine States are forced to live on a sort of city ship named Musashi (where the first episode takes place), and are watched over by the Testament Union, the group of countries that watch over the recreation progress.  Under their watchful eye, Musashi flies around their former homeland, watching iand waiting.

Meanwhile, there is worry of an impending Armageddon, as the timeline in the book of Testament the Testament Union uses to recreate history abruptly stops, not going past the current year. This is where the first episode begins, with the wild chase across Musashi.

P-01s, otherwise known as Horizon Ariadust.

In the midst of the "end of the world" situation, Aoi Toori is determined to

confess his love to P-01s, an android who curiously looks exactly like his childhood friend Horizon Ariadust, who was killed in an accident 10 years ago, as witnessed by Toori himself.  P-01s is no ordinary android, however, and the secret locked within her will spur on another massive conflict that will involve countries from above and below.

There is a LOT more we can cover here, but I'll leave that up to you.  There's a great little wiki site dedicated to the show if you'd like to get a little more in depth with characters, factions and events.  Visit the Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere Wikia for full character analysis, detailed episode synopsis, and just about anything else you need to know about the show to get ready for tomorrow's new episode.  Never thought you'd have to study for an anime, eh?  Me neither.
